Traditionally someone that studies climate was called a climatologist. This typically would be classifying climates (e.g. steppe, Mediterranean) and understanding why each type of climate occurs where it does. It was closely tied to agriculture and land cover, since climate determines those things.
In recent years "climate scientist" has come into use for someone that studies the climate system and how the different parts (atmosphere, oceans, cryosphere) interact with one another.

Paleoclimatolgists study the climates of past eras on earth, and often apply what they learn to projecting future climate.
Astrophysisits study climates on other planets and often apply their learning to understanding climate on earth.
