What predictions has global warming science made that came true?

Posted at: 2015-03-12
Here’s the first 30 that come to mind, I’ve kept them non technical and have also included those that failed. These are genuine scientific predictions, not based on unreliable and distorted media reports or biased blogs.

? Predicted an increase in average global temperatures against the 1951-80 and 1961-90 baselines. CORRECT

? Predicted that the Asian Brown Cloud would mask warming until such times as China and India reduced emissions of ‘cooling’ gases. CORRECT

? Predicted reversal of Arctic weather conditions (Arctic Dipole Anomalies), first happened in 2000 and has happened none times since. CORRECT

? Predicted that the annual Monsoon cells would become disrupted, which they have. CORRECT

? Predicted that hurricanes would occasionally happen in the southern hemisphere, which they now do. CORRECT

? Predicted that the jets streams, particularly the Polar Jet Stream, would start behaving erratically, which they are doing so ever more frequently. CORRECT

? Predicted that hurricanes would become more frequent and intense. Whilst there have been changes in hurricane patterns this is most likely due to a quasi-cyclical oscillation. PROBABLE FAIL

? Predicted that the Arctic would lose ice-mass at record rates. CORECT

? Predicted that the Antarctic would lose ice-mass at accelerated rates. NOT YET

? Predicted that the tropopause would rise thus raising the upper boundary of the troposphere and deforming the stratosphere. CORRECT

? Predicted the spread of temperature sensitive disease vector ranges. CORRECT

? Predicted a 10% decline in global farming outputs but didn’t take account of farmers switching to crops better suited to a changed climate. FAIL

? Predicted that the dynamic climatological boundaries would be impacted upon. CORRECT

? Predicted that sea-level rise would now be at about 3.6mm per year when it’s actually at 3.2mm a year (but still well within the min-max ranges that were calculated). NEARLY RIGHT

? Predicted that the greatest desertification would occur in Africa, it has in fact occurred in China. FAIL

? Predicted that seven island groups would be mostly inundated by rising sea-levels. Three are, three are partially inundated, one is fine. PARTLY CORRECT

? Predicted heat related stresses on a number of plant and animal species including affected hibernation, breeding and migratory patterns. MOSTLY CORRECT

? Predicted that half the glaciers in Glacier National Park would have melted by now, in fact almost all of them have gone. CORRECT

? Predicted increased intensity of snowfall in temperate and Polar climate zones. CORRECT

? Predicted that the average temperature rise by 2014 would be in the order of 1.05°C, it’s actually closer to 0.85°C. HALF RIGHT

? Prior to detailed analyses and calculations, predicted that equilibrium climate sensitivity would be between 2°C and 4.5°C, it now looks more likely to be between 2.5°C and 3.0°C. REASONABLY ACCURATE

? Early predictions were that carbon emissions would have levelled out by now, the rapidly expanding Asian economies have prevented this happening. FAIL

? Predicted that there would be an acceleration of the hydrological cycle leading to approx 10% more precipitation measured globally. CORRECT

? Predicted that economic losses by the year 2010 would be $400 billion a year. This was prior to the Stern Review that calculated that actual losses were $600 billion a year. NOT FAR OFF

? Predicted that annual migration across the Himalayan Plateau of the polar jet would start to fail around 2010. It failed for the first time in 2010. CORRECT

? Predicted that Himalayan glaciers would melt by 2035. This was published by the UN but was based on a flawed report. HIGHLY UNLIKELY

? Some predictions that thermohaline circulation would be affected by now, it’s not been yet. FAIL (SO FAR).

? Predicted boundary changes and transitions of the global climate zones. MOSTLY CORRECT

? Predicted a significant increase in the frequency and intensity of heatwaves – they’ve doubled. CORRECT

EDIT: A FINAL PREDICTION

Just come across this prediction.

? A year ago I predicted the average global temperature for the whole of 2013 as being 287.78158K according to the NASA dTs and LOTI records. The actual temperature was 287.76109K. CORRECT TO WITHIN 0.02°C.

They would go to conventions and eat high priced caviar and ride in limos and private jets. All these have come true. The big cahonna Algore especially.

Nothing they forecast has come true. All they have left are busted theories, tampered NOAA and GISS data, and fraudulent John Cook surveys.

All of their predictions have come true. Those that do not come true are either listed as: true, you are a denier for not accepting that it is true, true: the observed data is wrong, or not important to the basic theory.

first there is no 'Global warming' science. There is atmospheric sciences, climatology, meteorology, oceanography, but no 'global warming' science.

the predictions are for the earth's average temperature to warm up.- It has.

It predicted that weather would be chaotic- it has

There will be 50million climate refugees by 2010

The Arctic will be ice free by the summer of 2013

Our children wont know what snow is.

Antarctic ice will melt.

New york and Florida will be under water.

They all came true didn't they?

The one that matters. Global warming is happening

The plot is of temperature anomalies, not absolute temperature. UAH uses 1979-2008 as its reference period. I believe that GISS uses 1951-1980. I tried to confirm it with a Google search. What matters is the temperature trend. They are both right or they are both wrong. HadCrut3 shows a slightly weaker warming trend, but the more up to date HadCrut4 trend also agrees with GISS data and UAH data. RSS shows a slightly weaker trend than the other data sets. I would believe a dataset which includes the polar regions, where warming has been the greatest.

Not one that I am aware of.

They made 73 attempts at climate models --- which is a travesty in itself, there should have been ONE climate model, not 73. Nevertheless they were perfectly consistent, out of 73 attempts to get it right, 100% of them turned out to be WRONG. http://www.drroyspencer.com/wp-content/u...

Climate Realist - Would you like to explain why the GISS data in you graph is about 200% warmer than the UAH NSSTC data? And which one do you suppose is correct? --- since that is a HUGE disparity.

Also are you aware that in your "10 Indicators" graphic that almost all of those indicators are currently, according to actual data, the opposite of what your graphic shows?

For example, according to your graphic, sea ice is supposed to be declining --- but it's actually setting record highs. https://twitter.com/SteveSGoddard/status...

Some Examples:

Did you know that Global Warming killed the Loch Ness Monster? (sad hun? - no word on Godzilla)

How about the poor polar bears who's penis sizes are shrinking because of Global Warming (pollution). I wonder how many researchers they lost getting those measurements.

Global Warming is said to be hurting the brothel industry.

well, they said the planet would get warmer, and it has.
