Lake Michigan is not the pole. But it is about 85% frozen over and it is a novelty to people to explore. if you are asking about the pole, Arctic expeditions go back to the 1500s Nothing new

BTW this isn't the first time the lakes have almost become 100% frozen. The polar vortex brought more cold down than we had had in a while
