There is no hope for our climate?

watch Cosmos tonight

you will be glad you did

What you’ve said is correct apart from one very obvious error. ND will definitely not be as warm as Phoenix by the end of the century.

The year round average high temp for Bismarck ND is 12.7°C, for Fargo ND it’s 12.4°C; for Phoenix AZ it’s 30.3°C; ND is about 18°C cooler than Phoenix. Even in the warmest month of the year (July) ND is still 12°C cooler than Phoenix.

By the end of the century, if nothing further is done to slow down global warming, we can expect to see temperature rises of about 3°C. Rather than being like Phoenix, the climate of ND will be more like that of SD – a bit warmer but not massively so.

Remember also that whilst some changes are irreversible, that doesn’t mean the changes are bad. Sometimes it’s preferable to stay with things as they are rather than go back to how they were. Because ND has quite a cool climate there will have been major benefits to agriculture because of global warming, the farmers are probably loving it.

Of course, this needs to be balanced by looking at the wider picture. In hot states such as TX they don’t need any more warmth and indeed, the recent heatwaves have cost agriculture upwards of $10 billion.

It’s about keeping things in perspective. Climate change has both advantages and disadvantages, there will be winners and losers. And don’t believe all you see on TV or read in the media, it’s often designed to shock and appeal rather than responsibly inform.

For reliable information refer to the scientific and educational websites and publications.

Around the world people are taking steps to reduce emissions. In Europe (where I am) we’re on target to achieve an 80% reduction in emissions by 2050. Even in places like China, often criticised for it’s environmental record, the government have implemented emission reduction measures and just last Wednesday they ordered the six million most polluting vehicles to be scrapped.

There’s still a long way to go but progress is slowly being made.

The situation is very similar to when it was first announced that smoking was harmful. The tobacco lobby launched a propaganda campaign in much the same way as the oil industry did with climate change, many lies and rumours were spread and many individuals used the same arguments then as they do now when opposing climate change (it’s all about government control, imposition of taxes, scientists seeking grant money, no evidence, it’s beneficial etc).

In time the smoking deniers became a thing of the past and today barely anyone would dispute the dangers of smoking. The same thing is happening with climate change and in the future we’ll look back and wonder how anyone could have denied it was happening.

-That's up to Us. And what WE Do- with that Knowledge !! :o

Governments hold useless climate conferences and make decisions which are senseless, as, for example, that within a certain period of years the CO2 output is to be reduced by such and such a percent. This is completely nonsensical fussing and posturing because, even if that which is decided were to be achieved, the entire thing is not even a drop on a hot stone. This is because, already in the time between the resolution and its realisation, hundreds of millions more human beings will populate the Earth and produce still more filth and CO2 than the quantity that was decided upon. Therefore, the entire climate conference is counter-productive and idiotic because the only correct solution would be one from conferences concerned with the reduction of the overpopulation, at which resolutions, which are effective worldwide, for the radical decimation of the overpopulation, would be made and carried out and certainly by means of a worldwide, regulated control of births. Overpopulation is the root cause of the excessive consumption of natural resources and food stuffs, environmental damage and world poverty. The implementation of HUMANE global population reduction bringing a halt to births by way of a global effort e.g.. global birth stop for a period of seven years followed by seven years of births, then the cycle repeating over again. Surely this suggestion or something similar offers a realistic and effective solution for several major escalating world-wide issues

Re Zippie's Koch Brothers Wattsup Snake Oil:

Lindzen and Spencer have been affiliated with almost every fossil fuel industry front group of the past 15-20 years. Neither has more than a very minor track record in climate science research.

Here is what the overwhelming majority of top scientists agree on:

http://books.nap.edu/openbook.php?record...

“Climate change is occurring, is caused largely by human activities, and poses significant risks for a broad range of human and natural systems.”

http://www8.nationalacademies.org/onpine...

“Choices made now about carbon dioxide emissions reductions will affect climate change impacts experienced not just over the next few decades but also in coming centuries and millennia…Because CO2 in the atmosphere is long lived, it can effectively lock the Earth and future generations into a range of impacts, some of which could become very severe.”

“The Academy membership is composed of approximately 2,100 members and 380 foreign associates, of whom nearly 200 have won Nobel Prizes. Members and foreign associates of the Academy are elected in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research; election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a scientist or engineer.”

Do some research on the holocene optimum a period 9000 to 5000yrs ago, Earth was much warmer then, but it was a time of great advances, a time when civilizations like Egypt, Mesopotania, China arose.

A time when the Sahara had rivers and lakes, with crocodiles and hippos, a time when vast forests covered China in places where now just arid grasslands.

A warmer world is a lush, green and productive world, it's a pity it is not actually happening.

The claim of 97% of scientists subscribing to the alarmist's belief in Catastrophic, Man-caused, Global Warming has been totally discredited. It has been exposed as an example of extremely careless/biased research.

The AGW cultists who came up with that number were successful in making Obama look like a fool.

Les than 1/3rd of the 97% of climate scientists actually believe that "Global Warming/Climate Change" is a problem. The remaining 2/3rds only say that humans have an effect. He needs to get his facts straight before he goes running around worrying people to death about catastrophic happenings. Your fatalistic view is based on the belief of a fear-mongering environmentalist view of the world. Get a grip and do some actual research on what people like Richard Lindzen or Dr. Roy Spencer (climate scientists) have to say about it.

James Cameron is a Hollywood producer. If you believe in what Hollywood produces, then you might consider taking an adventure into the real world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Camer...

That series is a low rated fake intended to scare people.

Those 97% of scientists where rigged

I've been watching James Cameron's Years of Living Dangerously, and I'm worried. Ninety-seven percent of climate scientists agree that climate change is man-made. By conservative estimates, ND will be as hot as Phoenix by the end of the century. Oil and natural gas are indomitable in this economy, and already so much of what has happened is irreversible, even if we stopped today putting carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere, which, of course, we won't.

How can I live with this knowledge? How can I have any hope in humanity when it's certain there will be no place for us to live?

Never trust anyone profiting from the problem they present. This includes the government.

Its a science fiction series . Its fake.

Climate is not the threat....... Congress is.
