The term ‘global warming’ does not mean anything unless you give it a time scale. The temperature of the earth has been going up and down for millions of years. If there are extremes, it’s nothing to do with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, it’s not permanent and it’s not caused by us. Global warming is nonsense.

We dig up fossil fuels.
We burn fossil fuels in an atmosphere containing oxygen, thereby releasing CO2 according to basic chemistry.
CO2 is a greenhouse gas that traps heat, and we've know this for more than a century.
Therefore, if we burn fossil fuels, produce CO2, and CO2 traps heat, our planet gets warmer than it would have been had we not burnt the fuels.
The earth is heated by the sun, warming it until it loses as much heat as it receives. Greenhouse gasses affect the ability of the earth to lose this heat so that the earth is warmer than it would have been without them. What we are doing is increasing the greenhouse effect by our use of fossil fuels and this is causing what is known as global warming. While we don't know for certain what will happen, the chances are that it will be bad news.
