Why do people think global warming is a big deal?

Yes the alarmist sensational aspect is preferred by media and politicians, it makes money for media and gives power and control to politicians.

It is obvious to me that while global warming is a slight problem, running out of energy is a major problem, polluting our oceans, overfishing and the crazy way it is controlled by dumping over quota fish back dead. are some.

As to the energy problem, nuclear power is maybe our answer, if enough money and will was put forth to come up with safe reliable, environmentally safe forms of nuclear energy ( there are some like LFTR) we need development and finance to do it, then the Co2 problem would just go away, trying to ban fuels without supplying a cheap alternative is crazy, problem is nuclear has a bad image and is not in favour with environmentalists politicians and media.

It has always been the way to focus on one big issue, to divert attention from your failings,

Items that have been focused on before, HIV and AIDS, anti smoking etc., Iraq and Iran threat.

global warming is caused because of people. its due to industrialization, urbanization, deforestation, burning of fossil fuels etc. Nature can recycle its wastes naturally but if you multiply the waste to the power of a gazillion then she cant cope with it.

its a big deal because its leading to self destruction. global warming causes diseases, drowning of landmass, increased tectonic activity, extinction of biodiversity, destruction of crops, changes in weather patterns (this is bad too) and ideal breeding grounds for most disease causing microorganisms.

the Earth has life. its not just a piece of rock. would you like it if you were made to live in an oven and somebody's constantly increasing the temperature?

Ever heard the quality of energy? we move there is an amount of energy turnign into heat. This heat is later on hard to be re-used as potential energy. It doesnt matter what we do we cant stop it, but we could cut down the amount of unpotential enrgy used by developing more effective machines or and by using them less.

I could give a more detailed answer, but I am tired

It is not a big deal. There are many on this site who think so, though. Around 1650, according to records found in the 1990 IPCC report, the earth bottomed out on a Mini-Ice Age. The Earth's temperature rose 0.7 C from that point until in time until 1990. The major portion of that rise occurred before 1700, or long before the industrial age. Another thing to consider is that, it is hard to control a room's temperature within that tolerance.

There are those on this site who are paid to make that 0.7 rise in temperature a mountain. They are making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Quote by James Spann, American Meteorological Society-certified meteorologist: "Billions of dollars of grant money [over $50 billion] are flowing into the pockets of those on the man-made global warming bandwagon. No man-made global warming, the money dries up. This is big money, make no mistake about it. Always follow the money trail and it tells a story."

Quote by Tom McElmurry, meteorologist, former tornado forecaster in Severe Weather Service: “Governmental officials are currently casting trillions down huge rat hole to solve a problem which doesn’t exist....Packs of rats wait in that [rat] hole to reap trillions coming down it to fill advocates pockets....The money we are about to spend on drastically reducing carbon dioxide will line the pockets of the environmentalists....some politicians are standing in line to fill their pockets with kick back money for large grants to the environmental experts....In case you haven’t noticed, it is an expanding profit-making industry, growing in proportion to the horror warnings by government officials and former vice-presidents.”

It is only a big deal to those who stand to profit from it and those who are naive enough to accept...without question....the notion that Man is responsible for catastrophic global warming.

Taxpayers are lining university, solar, wind and ethanol industry pockets to the tune of Tens of $Billions of dollars each year. Money that could be used to reduce our deficit.

Global warming is a problem. Of course it is inevitable but WE are speeding it up without burning of fossil fuels whic releases co2 emissions into the air, which then in turn traps heat and warms things up. this is making the natural process of global warming speed up immensely and this is what scientists are worrying about. Of Course I agree, the media makes up bullshit to make us think things a certain way.

because global warming is harming the

It is a big deal and you're an idiot

Global warming is not big disaster, it is really slowly creeping up on us. The only reason people think it is going so fast is because Earth just came out of a large Quaternary ice age and is warming up fast so it looks like global warming is happening(earth has been really hot for most of the portion it has had life). We shouldn't be worrying about global warming not nearly as much, it is the only environmental cause people actually listen about. They don't even give a crap about causes that are 10 times worse like overfishing. Earth day isn't even Earth day anymore its Save The World From Global Warming Day. I think we should really pay attention to more environmental causes rather than Global Warming.

PS: The polar bears used to be threatened when now because of people there populations are getting high and are starting to cause problems but of course the media says they are still threatened to make it look like global warming is a HUGE GIGANTIC problem. We really need to listen to other environmental causes then just global warming.
