Now there have been a lot of protesting in China about air pollution. The air pollution is so bad in LA smog would be a breath of fresh to them

I think it was at least a hundred thousand years ago when our ancestors first started creating fires. When Aborigines arrived in Australia approximately 40 thousand years ago, the fires that they created can be monitored from the sediment cores offshore. Humans have been causing air pollution for a very long time.
At least in the early 1950s - the great Smog of 1952 killed at least 10,000 people in London and led to the Clean Air Act of 1956 - there was widespread public awareness of the link between air quality & health but public mass protest was not the norm then.

The Beatniks and Hippies did it back in the sixties. One of the leaders was Paul Ehrlich. These people polluted far more than any average person. They trashed places where they had their concerts, filling the air with smoke of marijuana. These were the most immoral people ever seen at that time. A good basis for the environmental movement. Don't you think?
