Sahara Desert, is it true The Romans caused it by catching and removing the large predators?

That's because (1) the theory is false, and (2) your idea that it's even a theory is also false. Nobody who knows the history of the Romans and Sahara would believe this for a moment. The Sahara has been a desert for over 10,000 years. Rome and Romans have been around for only 2,800 years, and they didn't have much to do with Africa until around 300 BC.

I have never heard that one, although I did read that Libya was much more fertile during Roman times,

general opinion is that the changing tilt of the earth caused the Sahara to become more desert like and that in thousands of years time it will become wetter again, I am not sure I believe that also.

No. There are many deserts around the world at about the same latitude. That is one thing that humans can't be blamed for. We can be blamed for its spread, though, because of cutting firewood and overgrazing.

"My uncle used to be a lumberjack in the Sahara Forest."

"But, the Sahara is a desert."

"Yeah, now."

No, they ate too many cheeseburgers.

In seriousness, a while back, and I can't find it right now, maybe you can remember, someone on here had a presentation by an honest environmentalist who thought the same way you stated about grazing. After many years of study and ruining the earth by that logic he found out that overgrazing is better than no grazing. And he laid out his argument in a very clear articulate manner.

If someone has that presentation I wish they would forward it to me, since I have recently changed computers. (Too many bits of cheeseburgers got caught in the keyboard.) Just kidding Prico.

I heard from reliable sources that Al Gore invented the deserts because he had too many camels in his backyard. Just kidding Prico.

Good one, Flossie! It was the Global Warming theory of the day, and now nobody can remember anything about it. That's where this one is headed: the scrap heap of weird theories.

Sahara Desert, is it true The Romans caused it by catching and removing the large predators?

When I was at school (admittedly not yesterday) we were told that the Romans had caused the Sahara to become more desert-like by catching and removing the large predators for use in the circuses in Rome and its provinces, thereby allowing grazing animals to flourish and thus overgraze the land, leading to desertification.

Nowhere now can I find any reference to this theory.

Has it been disproved and what gave rise to it in the first place? (The theory that is)
