Which of these questions are you most likely to answer?

Posted at: 2015-03-12
1. Probably, but mostly with a "canned" answer (I keep a file of frequently-used answers)

2. Yes, probably with links and analogies, unless there were much better answers already present.

3. Probably not

4. Yes, if there wasn't a good answer already, though with an explanation of why such a "small" change matters

5. No, I don't know the answer.

6. Depends on what answers are already there. If it's just a bunch of denialist nonsense, definitely. If there are answers at about my level, probably. If an expert has already answered it, probably not.

7. Probably, along with an explanation about how one year of "increase" from a previous record low is meaningless.

8. As with 5.

9. Probably.

10. Only if the only other answers were denialist nonsense, or there were no other answers, probably.

11. As per 5.

12. Probably, unless there was a much better answer already there.

In most cases, it depends on who is asking. If an obvious denier is asking, then I'll often ignore the question, unless I think that there needs to be some balance to the other denier answers that I see. If it's someone that is maybe a student, and seems to honestly want information, then I'll often answer, unless there are already good answers. Sometimes I think that too much information isn't all that helpful. (1, 2, 6, 7, 9, 12) are questions that we see from people honestly looking for information.

If the question is exceptionally scientific, (5, 8,11) I pretty much always leave it to you and others who have active studied climate, Bank computer programming doesn't make me an expert.

(3) is political, and it depends on how I feel. It would have been good if Gore hadn't always used the worst case, and left himself open to so much denier criticism.

(4, 7, 10) would require me to look up the answers. That's harder these days. I'd have to be feeling particularly energetic, and really think it was important to the asker.

And, again, if there are already good answers, often I'll give good ones a thumbs-up and move on.

1. Yes it is instigated by the IPCC part of the U.N. which is a political body

2. CO2 absorbs long wave radiation and re admits it causing a slow down of heat being radiated to space, this is effective at lower concentrations (up to 100ppm) but not at present values

3. No The inconvenient truth is flawed

4 0.8C

5 I find different definitions of synoptic climatology, seems more like meteorology

6 I would like to, but I don't really know why in fact it seems the northern hemisphere has warmed more than the southern hemisphere, of course Antarctica is a land mass and the Arctic is ocean, but there must be more to it than that.

7 Yes

8 Yes, do lunar cycles make a difference yes how much I don't know?

9 not sure we have any, but warmer (slightly) would be better

10 No there is according to global tide gauges, no acceleration in rate

11 probably not, as I don't believe we can as yet, accurately measure the radiative balance

12 Water, our world is a water world, and water regulates modulates our climate

1. yes

2. yes

3. no

4. yes

5. I would look up the answer and research it myself

6. I would look up the answer and research it myself while providing data in my answer as well as links to that which I am already aware of.

7. yes

8. again. I would look into the answer myself and give links to what I found.

9. Probably not as I do not really concern myself with these types of questions too often. It is subjective.

10. Yes

11. I would look it up myself

12 Probably

I'll answer 1 which means I don't need to answer the others. People are lazy pigs. The befoul their nest without any thought. If you've ever watched American Pickers or any of the Hoarder shows you know what I mean. In general those are extremes that prove the point. Rivers, lakes, parks etc. are filled with discarded garbage because people can't be bothered. Eco freaks are no better, for decades they have tried to save everything like forests. There is this belief that the Earth was once one big tree farm. Not true, mostly savannahs. Anyway they went to great lengths to put out small forests fires to the extent that forests are now too big to burn. Now to my point. Certain scientists came up with Global Cooling to try to get people to mend their ways, when that didn't work they tried Global Warming and now it is Climate Change. The goal is to get people to act responsibly instead of turning the Earth into a garbage heap or unmanageable ecosystems. Most people could care less. I don't believe in the myth but I try to do my part to save resources. My main concern is that we will run out of fresh water well before we have to worry about warming or cooling. As to the rest of the questions many are just scientific gobble dee ****.

Yes, to 2, 7 and 9.

This follows on from my previous question.

Below are 12 questions about climate change, you don’t need to answer the actual questions (you can if you wish) but please say whether you would answer them if they were asked on YA. Answers like yes, no, maybe, doubtful, I’d try… are all that’s needed.

I’m asking this out of interest more than anything else.

Please also see my next question as it’s related to this one.

Here’s the pseudo questions:

1) Is the issue of global warming more about politics than science?

Would you answer this question?

2) In simple terms, how does the greenhouse effect work?

Would you answer this question?

3) Should Al Gore and the IPCC have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize?

Would you answer this question?

4) By how much has the Earth warmed in the last 100 years?

Would you answer this question?

5) How does a dynamic climatology differ from a synoptic climatology?

Would you answer this question?

6) Why has the Arctic warmed more than the Antarctic?

Would you answer this question?

7) Is it true that the Arctic sea-ice has shrunk in recent years?

Would you answer this question?

8) How does the beat frequency of lunar apsides affect paleoclimatological temperature proxies?

Would you answer this question?

9) Is manmade global warming a good thing or a bad thing?

Would you answer this question?

10) Are sea-levels rising faster now than before the start of manmade global warming?

Would you answer this question?

11) How would you calculate the radiative exchange as a component of a boundary layer climatology?

Would you answer this question?

12) If greenhouse gases retain heat in the atmosphere, then what stops the world from overheating?

Would you answer this question?
