What would be the effects of this hypothetical temperature change?

First, there would be a mass extinction of species that are temperature sensitive.

One year is not nearly enough time for most of 'em to move.

Next, there would likely be mass starvation because of lack of food, because most of our crops would fail because of either heat or cold. (maybe that should be first.)

10° cooler would lead to an ice age.

10° warmer would make Siberia and N. Canada farm-able, but would cause crop failure and mass starvation in currently tropical areas.

I suspect that on the whole, cooler would be less disruptive to more people.

Thats what they do. They came down and changed te temp. The ice turned to floods then it rained for 40 days and 40 nights destroying mankind as we knew it. There is a new race. Changing the temp lower this time will result in more ice larger glaciers an increae in thr morth pole and the thereby discovery of Santa as more move north to enjoy the ice.

10C colder would mean that people would be able to farm east of Miami. 10C warmer would mean being able to set up a boat launch in the Empire State Building.

The worst thing about 10C colder wouldn't be Chicago being under a sheet of ice. The worst thing would be trying to grow crops with only 170ppm carbon dioxide.

it depends how fast the change is. this 10degree is an average over the planet. consider that the last ice age was only 5degrees less than today... in other words, this would be civilization changer.

warmer is better is a diversion, like co2 is plant food.

it will not be better for what humans have built

Unknown - we've never had that much temperature shift since multicellular life showed up. For starters, the tropics become uninhabitable.

You would have to explain how they achieved this change. Also, how did they maintain this change given Stefan Boltzmann?

wow toght question!

Assume that aliens with vast powers change the temperature of the Earth by 10 degrees C, either up or down, over the course of a year (with the change being effectively permanent thereafter). And, assume they keep the temperature changes approximately even and proportional (that is, for example, a high of 20C would become a high of 30C or a high of 10C)

What secondary effects would each change have? (other than vast chaos and disruption) Which do you think would be more survivable in the short term? Which do you think would be more survivable and/or pleasant in the long term? Do you think this says anything about the oft-repeated notion that "warmer is better"? Any other thoughts?
