What's an AGW (DA)?

Just curious; I'd ask Rio directly but he seems to have blocked me for some reason.

Rio has blocked me, too. He doesn't really want answers to his questions, he wants HIS answers to his questions. It reminds me of how Isaac Asimov jokingly said "When I ask for criticism, all I want is applause!"

Presumably DA stands for Dumb A s s, although trying to understand what Rio means by anything is usually a losing proposition.

I suspect that Rio read an article on AGW translated from Italian. Google and Babel Fish are good auto translators, but not perfect. "Da" = from in Italian. Depending on punctuation (such as parenthesis) that word might not have been translated. Thus, AGW(DA) means Anthropogenic Global Warming from ... some Italian article on the internet.

@Avatar:

Plagiarizing an answer like that is Kosher as long as you include a link to the source. Also, make sure you actually answer the question being asked, and try to be more brief when you do that.

Edit: Thanks to OM's clue:

"DA is a very dumb haircut from the late 50s and very early 60s So to me it means dumb and takes the place of words I am not allowed to use, which would be more fitting My own personal thing. The deniers I hope have gotten headaches trying to figure it out." -- http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

Note that Rio was an answerer to Big Gryph's question where Big Gryph provides this answer. Kudos to CF for getting it nearly correct.

Edit: "why would Rio block me?"

If your purpose here is to generate propaganda for one side, some think that preventing intellegent people from responding with valid arguments from the other side is a good idea for that.

@Sagebrush:

Yes, "Greenie" is an affectionate term. I would prefer that it not become derogatized. It becomes a ridiculous moving target to find words one can use without causing offense. Making sure that every reference to a political view is derogatory is counter productive and irritating.

I don't always agree with you but can't imagine why anyone would block you. I too asked what a DA was at lease once. So far I haven't seen an answer. I assumed it was something obvious that I hadn't figure out like BTW which stumped me for awhile. Chem Flunky had a good idea. Maybe she is right but it is kind of strange if we are supposed to know what it means. It isn't obvious but BTW I didn't get BTW either until Dr. Google helped me out.

I signed out to see if he explained in the question, but he didn't. (the additional details: "I once had a professional correct me using the wrong grammar. Truly its a strange world where dots and Tee's mean more then the meaning. But amateur alarmist tend to regress not progress. Hence the question.")

If I had to *guess*, he's probably calling realists dumb-a**es, in a Y!A-acceptable way.

I recall him explaining this some time ago. He means, as pegminer suggests, Dumb A s s.

Based on likely past behavioral patterns, DA could refer to criminal prosecutions by a

District Attorney, or the anti-science dupe/tool in question might be pining for the old days of sock hops and hodads:

Global warming is the rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans since the late 19th century and its projected continuation. Since the early 20th century, Earth's mean surface temperature has increased by about 0.8 °C (1.4 °F), with about two-thirds of the increase occurring since 1980.[2] Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and scientists are more than 90% certain that it is primarily caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases produced by human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation.[3][4][5][6] These findings are recognized by the national science academies of all major industrialized nations.[7][A]

Climate model projections were summarized in the 2007 Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). They indicated that during the 21st century the global surface temperature is likely to rise a further 1.1 to 2.9 °C (2 to 5.2 °F) for their lowest emissions scenario and 2.4 to 6.4 °C (4.3 to 11.5 °F) for their highest.[8] The ranges of these estimates arise from the use of models with differing sensitivity to greenhouse gas concentrations.[9][10]

Future warming and related changes will vary from region to region around the globe.[11] The effects of an increase in global temperature include a rise in sea levels and a change in the amount and pattern of precipitation, as well a probable expansion of subtropical deserts.[12] Warming is expected to be strongest in the Arctic and would be associated with the continuing retreat of glaciers, permafrost and sea ice. Other likely effects of the warming include a more frequent occurrence of extreme-weather events including heat waves, droughts and heavy rainfall, ocean acidification and species extinctions due to shifting temperature regimes. Effects significant to humans include the threat to food security from decreasing crop yields and the loss of habitat from inundation.[13][14]

Proposed policy responses to global warming include mitigation by emissions reduction, adaptation to its effects, and possible future geoengineering. Most countries are parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), whose ultimate objective is to prevent dangerous anthropogenic (i.e., human-induced) climate change.Parties to the UNFCCC have adopted a range of policies designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to assist in adaptation to global warming.Parties to the UNFCCC have agreed that deep cuts in emissions are required, and that future global warming should be limited to below 2.0 °C (3.6 °F) relative to the pre-industrial level.Reports published in 2011 by the United Nations Environment Programme and the International Energy Agencysuggest that efforts as of the early 21st century to reduce emissions may be inadequate to meet the UNFCCC's 2 °C target.

I asked that question a long time ago who used it as a derogatory term for a true scientist. And it came back with the vile explanation you see clarified on many of these answers. It is a term so crude and repugnant, it just had to be originated by a greenie, and it was. I love it when someone turns the tables on these vile creatures affectionately called greenies.

I've seen Big Gryph say "DA denier". That might be related but I have no clue either way.

Just curious; I'd ask Rio directly but he seems to have blocked me for some reason.
