The only problem with that is, as far as I'm aware, we really don't have a good baseline back more than, say, 20 or 30 years, if that. So comparing this year, with ocean temperatures, to prior years, without ocean temperatures, would be like comparing apples and oranges.
Ocean heat content is a better measure of global warming, however the measurement of ocean heat is simply not good enough, especially the deep oceans.
