What are some effective ways to arrest global warming and rising sea levels?

Actually the extra human emissions of greenhouse gases, have built up so much since the beginning of the industrial revolution, for AGW to last beyond 2100. As an individual, you can reduce your carbon footprint and encourage others to do the same. As Chem says, we need to switch to alternative sources such as wind, solar as well as converting to alternative fuel vehicles. recycling is very important and it is important not to waste food.

It is AGW that is responsible for oceans rising and as we gain some control over AGW this will help alleviate the sea rising problem.

First thing we must all do is understand that some of these changes will take place no matter what we do (whether emissions are lessened or not). Thus, we must all understand that adaptation is a must. Once that is understood, then change can take place.

So, here are three ideas on how to combat these sea level issues through adaptation.

1. Make a wall - Coastal cities and areas will need protection. One obvious way to attempt this is through walling them off with bulkheads, dikes, seawalls, and pumping systems. Dikes and pumping systems are already being used in areas such as New Orleans that are well below sea level. In fact, all of these are being used effectively in other parts of the country..

Though these manmade structures will help save property and stop flooding, they may not serve to protect shorelines aesthetically; nor will they necessarily protect ecosystems (marshes, etc.) from harm.

2. Elevate the land - Using fill to elevate beaches/ the area around bodies of water has been successful in other parts of the country. The nice thing about this method of dealing with rising sea levels is that it will allow beaches to keep much of their aesthetic beauty and recreational usefulness.

This method will be an especially prudent one to use in areas where the shoreline is important to the economy, as is the case with the Caribbean islands, Hawaii, and the like.

But again, remember that even if the beaches stay intact, the surfing could be rough due to the increased size of waves. So practice with caution all of you surfer dudes!

3. Learn how to effectively turn saltwater into drinking water - Okay, this is the one that could solve the problem of negatively impacted reservoirs and lessened rain due in part to rising sea levels. First, it is important to understand that desalination (the process of taking the salt out of ocean water, usually for the purpose of drinking it) is something that we can already do. For instance, desalination has been occurring on ships and other arid regions of the world for some time now. However, it is time consuming and expensive (it costs about $1,000 per acre foot to desalinate ocean water as opposed to $200 per acre foot to utilize normal drinking water). Still, the prices are falling.

Further, there may be a time when we have no choice but to go to the ocean for our drinking water. Then - as with everything else - our ability to do this in a cost effective manner will no doubt increase when/ if this time comes.

Develop carbon free energy that is cheaper than fossil fuel energy, without subsidies, mandates, or carbon taxes. You have to be able to get energy that other countries that are coming out of poverty would want to use. China and India will be responsible for more carbon emissions than Europe and USA combined. The rest of the developing world is even more. So to stop CO2 emissions, you have to address CO2 emissions in those countries.

That alone will not arrest global warming, as the planet has been warming naturally for centuries. The sea level has also been rising for centuries, at a few mm per year.

Lot's of experts are trying to make fossil fuel alternatives work, but most cost twice as much as dirty coal, so few investors are interested. Government subsidies and insentitives rarely last more than two years which makes them ineffective. There are a few natural sources of carbon dioxide and methane that could be captured and sequestered, but 1% solutions are typically ignored such as a giant tent over a swamp with farting cows. Animals fart mostly methane, and swamps produce methane, water vapor and carbon dioxide, all powerful green house gas as do many dorment volcanos. There are lots of ideas on how to sequester green house gases, but no large scale pilot plants that I know of to perfect sequestering.

It's been rising since the end of the last ice age so good luck with that.

There has been no dramatic increase in sea level rise in recent times.

Please stop listening to alarmists. They just naturally lie to create fear. You will say "Temperatures WILL rise" or "Sea level MAY rise". When you look at actual facts and evidence you will see that their predictions always fail. You're better off reading tea leaves to predict future temperatures than rely alarmist computer models.

Basically, what we need to do is reduce the major causes of CO2 and/or methane increase. So, we need to switch from fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum to renewable and/or nuclear power, we need to reduce deforestation in tropical areas (and maybe even do some reforestation), and we need to manage our agriculture (particularly of cows and rice) so that either we produce less methane, or the methane is captured and burned as fuel, or both.

There's also the possibility of some flavor of geoengineering, ranging from direct CO2 capture to increasing algal growth in the oceans to putting up orbital mirrors. But I strongly suspect preventing the problem will do more than most attempts to artificially reverse it, other than a few relatively minor ideas like terra preta soils (basically, using charcoal as a soil additive).

Obama already did with his spoken word in 2009 .

perpetrating this scam , snake oil scheme

Arrest all skeptics and deniers so we can get on with assuaging the powers of the climate unrestrained.

There are none. It's natural and cyclic and has been occurring since the creation of the earth and will continue until the destruction of the earth regardless of what humanity does.

Stop using fossil fuels, use free energy technologies instead :-)

Use handcuffs.

What 'global warming'??

Please don't allow yourself to be a dupe of the AGW Cult.
