It is strange in a way because cold can be ameliorated by wrapping up to keep warm. Heat is harder to avoid yet cold still kills more.
For people who are used to warm weather, experiencing cold is very hard and may even cause to death if one cannot really manage well. So, I guess, cold is much dangerous than heat, at least for me.

Number of the Week: 63% v. 31% A study of national death certificates by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention covering the five year period of 2006 to 2010 attributed 10,649 deaths to weather events.
Of the deaths attributed to the weather, about 63% were tied to exposure to the cold or hypothermia; about 31% of the deaths were caused by heat, heat stroke or sun stroke and the remaining 6% were blamed on storms, floods or lightning.
