Why does this former NASA scientist say global warming is nonsense?

Posted at: 2015-03-12
He says it here http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-London/2014/04/26/Former-NASA-Scientist-Global-Warming-is-Nonsense

He's just stating a self evident truth

"Professor Woodcock is Emeritus Professor of Chemical Thermodynamics at the University of Manchester and has authored over 70 academic papers for a wide range of scientific journals. He received his PhD from the University of London, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a recipient of a Max Planck Society Visiting Fellowship, and a founding editor the journal Molecular Simulation."

Notice how the Alarmists in this thread make no effort to present evidence --- they just try to smear Woodcock. Alarmists can only mock and scoff because they have nothing else.

-----------------------

It took maybe ten seconds to find a major error in his analysis:

"water is a much more powerful greenhouse gas and there is 20 time more of it in our atmosphere (around one per cent of the atmosphere) whereas CO2 is only 0.04 per cent"

Why am I supposed to believe a guy that doesn't even know how much water vapor is in the atmosphere?

Actually, most of the other things he says are demonstrably wrong, too. Does he really believe this nonsense:

"...there is "no reproducible evidence" that carbon dioxide levels have increased over the past century"

Find one competent scientist (you can include the incompetent ones like Roy Spencer and Richard Lindzen too) that agrees with that statement.

Perhaps when he was younger he did good work in some field, but he doesn't have any credibility at this point in his life.

Some options

- he is paid to say so

- he likes being different

- he has no training in climatology

Why do people have affairs, cheat on taxes, shoplift, download pirated music, or deny global warming? So many reasons.

Note: references to Breitbart are a signal that the user is uneducated, you might want to avoid them in the future.

that's why he's Former

Deniers are conspiracy freaks

Ha! Ha! Just look at the greenies duck for cover with their usual antics. All these scientists are fed up with being subjugated for so long, they are finally speaking out.

So I will try to be as respectful and non-confrontational as possible when answering your question, we're all people here, everyone's on the same side, and when people try to correct you it's because they care enough that you know the truth.

First, you should understand that the energy industry (electric, natural gas, coal, crude oil) is a multi trillion dollar business. Whenever there is an industry or organization making that much money, they always seem to become befriended by the government. Governments find it in their best interests to protect such lucrative industries, because governments make billions of dollars of profit from these companies. When energy companies come under attack by the EPA and climatologists, they are putting the government at risk of having to possibly shut down the dirtier industries such as coal.

As Eliot correctly mentioned, governments (perhaps surprisingly) do pay scientists via government lobbyists to refute that global warming exists. In this way, governments are safeguarding their assets in energy industries. If the government admitted that global warming is real, they would be forced to shut down coal mining operations and electric power plants, and essentially would lose billions of dollars.

Now don't get me wrong, Dr. Woodcock is extremely well renowned and very qualified as a chemical engineer and former NASA scientist. I will not make the claim that he is being paid by the government to refute global warming, but that does take place quite often. The truth of the matter though, is that while carbon dioxide is absolutely essential to life on earth, just like with everything too much co2 has adverse effects on our atmosphere.

Quick lesson in climatology/oceanography/chemistry:

The sun emits radiation in the form of alpha, beta, and gamma rays, where gamma rays are qualified as electromagnetic radiation and the most harmful. When sunlight enters our atmosphere, alpha and beta rays (which are relatively harmless) get absorbed in our skin (causing tans), but the majority of the radiation reflects off water surfaces and foremost reflect off of snow and ice in the poles; this is known as albedo. The majority of electromagnetic gamma radiation gets deflected around earth due to earth's magnetic field, though gamma rays still make it into the atmosphere. In a perfect system, the chemistry of the atmosphere will normally be balanced enough where reflected radiation can escape back out of the atmosphere into space. However, whenever there is too much co2 in any part of the atmosphere it acts like a blanket. Reflected radiation trying to escape back into space actually gets re-reflected off the clouds and consequently remains in our atmosphere instead of escaping. After this happens for a prolonged amount of time, it naturally heats up our atmosphere because radiation continues to enter, but fails to exit the atmosphere. Once this happens, the first things to begin melting are the ice caps, and this is where the problem lies. Deepwater ocean currents flow from the poles all around the world, but whenever there is extensive melting and introduction of more water, it stops the deep ocean currents. Whenever currents stop moving, water becomes stagnant, leading to reduced oxygen circulation in oceans and increased mortality rates of marine life. Worst of all though, is that deepwater currents prevent polar region water from entirely freezing, but when stagnant the oceans begin to freeze over, leading to an ice age.

This might sound like a bunch of rubbish, but this has happened several times in earth's history, as taught in historical geology. What you need to know is that global warming is not some new concept, it's a scientific phenomenon that has always occurred naturally. The controversial nature of this topic comes from the claim that increased human population SPEEDS UP global warming.

I'm not trying to prove you wrong or claim that you are stupid, because stupid people don't ask questions. But global warming truly is real, and it can have catastrophic consequences. I encourage you to do your own research and come to conclusions on your own, for knowledge truly is power.

Sounds like a dodo to me This guy is so famous that wikipedia hasn't heard of him
