Increasing the round trip between feeding & nesting grounds by 70K would naturally dramatically decrease the reproductive success of marine animals that are not exactly built for walking long distances.

These greenies will do anything to enhance their political agenda. So you can see that this is an age old corrupt formula for manipulating the masses.

Firstly the report is focused on populations in 2100, so they have to use models. Interesting if the Antarctic ice extent continues to grow it will also have negative impacts on penguins.

Furthermore in the article you referenced they comment:

"Our models take into account both the effects of too much and too little sea ice in the colony area"

So they are investigating scenarios of less and more ice.

I guess this is the problem when you base your info on rot you read on denier sites, rather than science.

Sea ice is not expanding everywhere (in Antarctica) that a blanket denier statement it is expanding in some places and contracting in others. The paper is referring to the future as climate change progresses and frankly expansion of Antarctic sea is not expected to last for very long, initial melt of glacial ice is playing a part in cooling the waters around Antarctica but as coastal glacial ice shrinks this effect will decrease and what is happening in the Arctic will also start to happen in Antarctica.

The Antarctic food chain is linked to algae which grows in the nutrient rich cold water attaching itself to sea ice (under the water) krill in turn feed on that and much of the rest of the life that floods into Antarctic in the Summer feed on the krill from Penguins to Whales, with a few predators that feed on some of these animals as well, but all depend on the algae, krill combination it is the very base of the food chain. Antarctic Krill form one of the largest biomass's on the planet.

Regardless of what denier try to pretend from a short term expansion of Antarctic sea ice the reality is the planet is warming both major glacial ice masses are shrinking

Antarctic sea ice will also start to shrink when sea bound glacial tongues have retreated enough.

Antarctic sea ice in fact shrinks every Summer and recovers in Winter, unlike Arctic sea ice, seas beyond the Antarctic are warming so it will start to see the effects of that.

Out side the rarefied air of denier lies, a number of scientists projected (back in the 90's) that initial warming may indeed have this effect on Antarctic sea ice but only in the short term, of the ice on the planet the glaciers of Antarctica, Greenland, Arctic sea ice, Antarctic sea ice and general mountain glaciers, are 5 different points, just one, Antarctic sea ice is expanding (by a few percent) and deniers fixate on that while they ignore the other 4 which are all shrinking at varying rates.

So your usual rubbish, no this is not science but stations like this are run by administrators not scientists, I note you had to go trolling back to 1994 to find this story, had you bothered to read your story you would have found three things, the french (as your story states) started this 12 year before 1994 (so the mid 1980's) and not just Greenpeace but other countries with bases in the area (including my own) also suggested it was a bad idea, you might have also noticed that the Penguins involved where Adele, which are very widespread and not at all like the Emperor, which is what I thought you where talking about, or have you lost track of your own question (again) Most countries that run airfields in Antarctica do so on ice, either sea ice (in Summer) or inland ice runways such as the one Australia runs, these have no real effect on the wildlife as inland (for the most part) there is no life.

As for your understand of banding and what it does/or doesn't do to birds, could you make a better point that you are clueless when it comes to science, as you said these programs have been underway for decades, and it is only in the last decade or so that populations have declined or are you suggesting Emperors suddenly decided they only recently, don't like being banded, that sadly is about the level you seems to operate at.

Yes there is a little stress to the bird when it is banded, but had you ever seen a Leopard seal chase such a penguin through an ice flow you would get that being banded is a minor inconvenience and they get over it in a short period when they realise they are not going to be eaten.
