Right after global cooling came global warming.
From 1940 to 1974 global cooling was all the hype and we were trying to figure out how to melt the ice back then. Time magazine had many story's regarding the global cooling. It wasn't until the early 1990's when the National Science Board and National Academy of Sciences decided it looked more like the opposite; welcome to global warming. Sometimes it's best to start at the end of one belief to see where the next starts.
1820s - Scientists began to understand the greenhouse effect, that some gases in the atmosphere trap heat from the sun.
1859 John Tyndall identified gases that actually do trap heat: H2O, CO2,
1896 Svante Arrhenius calculated the effect of changing levels of CO2. He was looking for an explanation of ice ages. He and Arvid Hogbom concluded that human emissions of CO2 could warm the earth but they didn't foresee how much CO2 humans would eventuall be emitting.
1932 Popular Mechanics magazine publishes a short item stating the increasing CO2 levels are causing temperatures to rise.

1938 GS Callender found a correlation between rising temperatures and rising CO2 though he wasn't very persuasive but his paper was published in the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorolgical Society.

1956 Physicist Gilbert Plass used early computers to calculate the effect of human emissions of CO2

1960 Dave Keeling calculated CO2 levels and that they were rising -- thus that the oceans were not absorbing all the human emissions as previously believed.
1975 Wallace Broecker published "Climatic Change: Are We on the Brink of a Pronounced Global Warming?" in Science Magazine, triggering the use of the term "Global Warming"
1979 Personal item: I first learned of global warming at the University of California, in an undergraduate class on Economics of Population.
1988 the UN established the IPCC to access the degree to which humans were changing global climate.
2001 The IPCC released AR3 which says that humans are likely causing the atmosphere to warm. This report is important because it generated a large increase in climate research. Understanding of climate advanced rapidly after 2001.
2003 A heat wave in Europe killed 70,000 people and caused crop shortfalls It was the hottest summer on record in Europe. This generated some speculation that climate change was now affecting us.
2006 The film Inconvenient Truth was released. It publicizes the science of climate change specifically because David Guggenheim did not believe climate change was getting appropriate coverage in the media.
2007 The IPCC report AR4 was released based on all current research and the language is upgraded from likely to very likely that humans are causing the climate to warm. This was the first report based on the new advanced levels of research.
2014 AR5 is scheduled for release.
I first heard about 'the powers that be' were going to use the environment to hold countries hostage back in the early 1960s and some point to earlier than that as its true catch on fire genesis. I, stupid me, never thought the average citizen would get scared or go along with such nonsense. In the mid sixties there was an environmental convention held in Stockholm. There a bunch of radical malcontent people like Paul Ehrlich got a lot of press coverage about the doom of the Earth. A few years later, according to these scientists, we were going into an Ice Age. Then the Ice Age was the rage.
Life magazine of January 3, 1970, stated: “Scientists have solid experimental and theoretical evidence to support . . . predictions” such as: “In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution,” and “increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will affect earth’s temperature, leading to mass flooding or a new ice age.”
Well, at that time the Earth was going through a slight warming trend, When this was pointed out to the malcontents, they immediately reversed course and now proclaimed Global Warming. Notice the cause for both warming and cooling of the earth is allegedly caused by CO2? It mattered not to them which way the temperature was going, they were going to make a crises out of it.
