Global warming can be either natural or manmade, both have very different causes.
Natural Warming

Natural warming and cooling is associated with many different things, the most significant of which is the way Earth moves in space and the effect this has on the amount of heat energy we receive from the Sun.
There are several such cycles that last from 22,000 to 225,000,000 years. Over thousands and millions of years the effect on the climates is very significant.
There are shorter-term natural influences that can have a small effect on our climates, these generally relate to changes in the amount of heat energy being received from the Sun. Over a few centuries this can warm or cool the planet by as much as 0.5°C.
There are influences here on Earth that impact upon the climate on time scales of a few months to a few decades. These tend to be associated with changes in the atmosphere and the ocean. They can cause a small amount of short-term warming or cooling, over the course of a full cycle the two phases cancel each other out and there is no net change in global temperatures.
Manmade Warming

The other type of warming is caused by us and is sometimes referred to as manmade or anthropogenic global warming.
It is happening because we are producing very significant quantities of greenhouse gases, mostly in the form of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide.
These gases exist naturally in the atmosphere and retain heat, if they didn’t then Earth would lose what is in effect an insulating blanket.
We’re producing far more of these gases that natural sources can cope with and they’re building up in the atmosphere, this is causing more heat to be retained.

The Great Global Warming Swindle
One area I do not see is methane. There are billions and billions of mammals on this earth. (animals of all kinds and us.) They all produce methane gas when they do number 2. Seriously, think of all the cattle around the world for instance. Another source is volcanoes. They produce millions of tons of methane. There are undersea volcanoes that people never even hear about. The other but less obvious ways too. Sea Ice. When it melts it gives off large amounts of it. Anything that gives off methane that lived millions of years ago and is gone, still leaves methane in the ice. Now all of this is natural. Very little is a man made problem. But as we need more beef and pork, well, the more methane is produced. Oddly enough, some farmers capture this gas to run their equipment.
1. We burn a lot of stored energy (fossil fuels), adding heat beyond what the sun does. 2. The byproduct is carbon dioxide and water vapor, which tends to trap heat. 3. We've been deforesting this planet for centuries, making for less CO^2-consuming plants. If all this exceeds Earth's ability to radiate excess energy as microwaves out into space, our planet will cook, possibly ending up like Venus.
The smoke that we make everyday that comes from cars, trains, factories, and other things basically floats in the air and pushes up against the ozone layer. Which makes a whole in the ozone layer. That makes it easier for the sun to shine on earth which melts the polar ice caps and change the weather patterns.
