This completely overlooks the fact that grant money does not normally go to the scientists themselves, the majority of whom are on a fixed salary regardless of what they are studying and irrespective of their views on global warming. I know, I’ve been a climate scientist since the 80’s.
However, when it suits the sceptics frequently change this and claim that global warming was invented by the Illuminati, the Club of Rome, the green industry, Margaret Thatcher, basically whoever comes to mind when they’re looking for a scapegoat.
Undoubtedly governments have made money on the back of global warming through the introduction of taxation, financial impediments and other instruments that raise revenue. But they haven’t actually made any money as such. If they didn’t receive these incomes they’d simply tax something else. A government doesn’t need to invent something in order to impose taxes, they just do it.
This argument also falls flat on it’s face when you consider that several countries have no carbon taxes at all but the governments still accept that global warming is happening.
Take Saudi Arabia as an example, a country that is rich thanks to it’s oil industry. They stand to lose a phenomenal amount of money because of global warming but they’re one of the most active supporters of taking steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They’ve even gone so far as to built the world’s first carbon neutral city (Mosdar). And the taxation argument completely fails as the Saudis don’t pay any tax other than a 2?% religious tax.
Exxon originally orchestrated a propaganda campaign aimed at discrediting the science of global warming. They came clean in 2006 and admitted same. Now, thanks to the advice from their own in-house teams of researchers and the overwhelming and irrefutable evidence from around the world, they are committed to taking steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and have dedicated $600 billion to develop new fuels. Having spent well over well over $100 million trying to disprove global warming, if anyone has evidence that it doesn’t exist then surely it should be Exxon.
There are some people who would prefer, for various reasons, that global warming was false. To this end they level any number of unsubstantiated claims against just about anyone if they think it will further their cause. It’s not helped by the fact that denier websites and media perpetuate the lies that came from the now defunct propaganda campaihn.
Here's an idea. If somebody absolutely proved global warming was not a problem tomorrow, who would be out of a job come Monday?
I'll give you a head start- everybody working on carbon sequestering schemes, everybody at the Hadley Climate Research Unit (It was founded because Margaret Thatcher wanted a better picture of global warming). Everybody involved with carbon credits. All the third world despots looking for "climate reparations." That's a start, I'm sure you can think of more.
Edit: Scientists DO write grant proposals. Hello! Those that receive large grants are able to employ many scientists working for a "fixed salary." It's called a research group. If the scientist cannot secure a large and steady stream of funding, a lot of other scientists are out of work as well. If global warming is not an issue the grants stop and the research group dissolves.
Those who wish to implement an environmentalist agenda gain from it as it gives a crisis whose solution is to implement this agenda that they have been presenting all along. Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said,'Never let a crisis go to waste.'
People who are selling alternate energy solutions like solar or wind both of which are not equal to real fuels. They are able to charge more as people will think they are doing so good that they won't care they pay 4 or 5 times more than others for their energy.
I have a better question to ask. Since global warming is not a hoax, who has the most to gain by saying that it is a hoax?
There are TRILLIONS of dollars to be made selling carbon credits and controlling businesses, Warmists driving this fraud are seeking all those types of powers.
Warmists have ALREADY been collecting BILLIONS of taxpayer dollars each year for 'global warming research' and this has been going on for MORE THAN 30 YEARS!!!

Who stands to gain from it if it actually is a hoax? Governments certainly do not as they will have to spend a boat load of money to fix the, apparently non-existent, problem. the only ones I see gaining from it are those entities that sell products and services used in greener environments and lifestyles.

Yup! You are right. Just where are they spending all that money? Going on vacations . .er . .environmental conferences, setting up phony green automobile and other manufacturers, paying lobbyists, paying the UN, paying people like you to make phony charts and spew lies, getting stuck in Antarctica, paying off people like Maurice Strong, Al Gore, and George Soros, paying off news media, paying off and putting pressure on politicians and scientists, buying James Hansen, paying off court appointees to exonerate people like Phil Jones, just to name a few. Sustaining this hoax takes a lot of money.

Frankly I prefer to call it an exaggeration but I think it is fair to call it a scam. There is a reason that alarmists are almost all leftists. It isn't because their politics rises to level of science. It is because their politics dictates their belief system.

It is true that "rightists" tend to be skeptical but it is because of the obvious misuse of science by the left. Duhh!!! AGW alarmism is all about politics.
