Will banning people from burning wood in Fireplaces really stop global warming?

Do you really mean fireplaces or do you mean in any wood burning stove? If only fireplaces, what design? In a poorly designed fireplace more warm air from a room is sucked up the chimney than heat is radiated into the room to warm it, so yes- that type of fireplace would contribute to global warming.

My 75+% efficient wood stove reduces global warming by burning a product that would emit exactly the same amount of CO2 in the process of decay as it emits when burnt. If burnt I also get the added benefit of not having to heat my house with electricity (produced from the burning of coal or natural gas) or propane. The real benefit is I can cut the wood on my own land and not spend more than $20 in gasoline for my chainsaw to heat my house for the year.

Bans on fireplaces have nothing to do with global warming. They are to protect the breathability of our air. As much as I miss my fireplace, I'm glad I don't have to breath air like the Chinese'.

Around the San Francisco Bay Area, they have "Spare the Air" days when burning wood in fireplaces is not permitted.

That has nothing at all to do with global warming.

Burning wood puts small ash particles, SO2, etc into the air.

Spare the air days are done when there's no wind to disperse the pollution.

Not to address global warming.

Burning wood is pretty much a carbon recycling process.

Well it will set of deniers off on their usual array of one and two line rants, but trees absorb their CO2 from the atmosphere which is better for AGW than if you use electricity derived from a coal fired power station.

Burning wood produces particulates that also cause cooling, but here is the problem they also present a problem for those with respiratory problems like Asthma or Emphysema, that is the main reason many local governments are taking action on wood burn, not because of AGW, but deniers do like to pretend all actions are in some way linked to AGW.

In the U.S. almost 19 million people suffer from asthma and almost 7 million of those are children, with around 3400 deaths per year related to just asthma, the number of Asthma suffers is growing.

Unless of course deniers would like to pretend these stats are also faked by Al Gore and that Asthma really doesn't exist, frankly on past denier comments such a denier claim would not surprise me.

In a word – no. In some circumstances it’s actually beneficial to burn firewood and could reduce the effects of global warming.

Compared to other sources of greenhouse gases then open fires are minute, if all fireplaces were bricked up the effect would be so minimal as to be irrelevant.

If you cut a tree down and burn it then you release the stored carbon back into the atmosphere, so it’s only going back to where it came from in the first place.

Furthermore, burning casualty timber reduces greenhouse gas emissions. If a tree blows down and is left to rot then it releases the same carbon as it would were it to be burned. But, in addition, the degradation process includes bacterial methanogenesis – the production of methane gas. Pound for pound, methane is 23 times as effective as carbon dioxide at causing global warming, by burning the timber the methane isn’t released.

Another thing to consider, burning firewood produces black particulate matter (soot) and once in the atmosphere this absorbs incoming solar radiation (sunlight) thus preventing the solar radiation from contributing to global warming in the first place.

The alternative is to use gas or electricity for heating and this is a major contributor to global warming.

Antarticice,

I have not seen one "denier" here on this post saying anything against your claims.

See how this works? When you actually post facts instead of your silly models and your poorly0veiled insults, you don't have "deniers" arguing with you.

AGW is a myth. The globe has been warming since the little ice age ended

"Catastrophic, Man-caused Global Warming/Climate Change" quite simply....is not a reality......Period!

Light your fire, get a stick and cook some marshmallows......everything will be okay.

Um, No.

Global Warming is actually a myth, so nothing will stop it.

Not a snowball's chance in .....
