Was the Antarctic research expedition failure?

yes a failure. They were planning to show warming, and instead showed that there is more ice now than 100 years ago. This is a success for true science however to accurately portray the change in climate.

Was the Antarctic research expedition failure? I assume you are talking about "The Australasian Antarctic Expedition" rather the other expeditions [1] , Yes, at least a partial failure.

Due to shoddy planning (by the scientist), No!

I do think it is rather telling how deniers are ignorant of the fact that it is the captain who is responsible for navigation. [2]

Lucky for the people on board, they have plenty of food, a bar and even a sauna [3], the original expedition who they were trying to honor, was stuck for 2 years in a wooden hut and had lost 2 team members. [4] And even in February 1913 (the month of the lowest area of antarctic sea ice) the ship to rescue them could not make it due to bad whether even thought it had left only 2 hours earlier from the base and the expedition was stuck for 2 years in a wooden hut [4]

But I do agree this is the "best case" that deniers have presented against AGW. in 2013.

Not if they come away from their experience with the knowledge that "catastrophic, Man-made global warming" has had no impact on Antarctica and that climate science still has a LONG way to go before there is even a rudimentary understanding of Earth's climate. I hope that the extremist wing of the AGW crowd does not try to spin the expedition experience into some sort of "evidence' of CAGW.....that would represent a definite failure for the trip.

Financially, the rescue efforts will be a Huge expense for the expedition organizers.

C is clueless as always, from the morons own page: The Australasian Antarctic Expedition 2013-2014 is all about adventure, exploration, scientific discovery, and communication. We are exploring one of the most remote regions on our planet. In spite of over a century of discovery – including aerial and satellite surveys – remarkably little has been explored. Crucially this pristine southern polar region is uniquely placed to monitor the health of our planet. The AAE has a team of scientists who are world experts in the natural and physical sciences while also being passionate about science communication. To help with this, the AAE is using the latest satellite technology to support a full range of social media, including Google+ Hangouts on Air, Twitter and YouTube, to report our first findings directly to you live from Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. We want our findings to reach the public and policy makers as soon as possible.

and Lizzy is again clueless because they spent boatloads of money on google, twitter ect, they spent zip, zero nada on weather, and ice charts. Gary is so far gone there is no hope for him, I hope Turney gets sued and ends up bankrupt like his 'science' already is

Id like to know why Twenty-five out of 26 stories on the network morning and evening news shows since Dec. 25th failed to mention that climate change had anything to do with the expedition.

Shoddy planning equals basing climate assumptions off lines plotted on graph paper according to some climate model as opposed to what is actually going down there. When AGW cultists make plans like that they get stuck the unforeseen consequences of their failed computer climate models. This is what happens when their failed ideology meets reality. And yes it's funny as hell to watch.

They'll find some paradoxical excuse to blame this massive failure of their attempt to create more AGW propaganda on AGW and on Bush. They have no choice considering that news of this embarrassment has already hit the press.

The expedition may yet be a success. I think they are homeward bound on the second and final leg of their expedition. They gave themselves lots of work to do so it will be interesting to see how much they accomplished.

@C "What has this got to do with AGW???? "

Well, the expedition is being led by Chris Turney who claims to be a Professor of Climate Change and the expedition is carrying out work in his area of expertise. I think the link between climate change and AGW has been established?

Other facts are interesting. They knew that Mawson's base has been inundated with ice for the past three years. There were several journalists on board including one from the UK Guardian newspaper and one from the UK's public broadcaster, the BBC. All kinds of news reporting links were established to publish any findings as soon as possible.

Professor Turney also helped to set up a company called CarbonScape that is looking at ways to capture carbon. He is a director and many people with a family name of Turney seem to be shareholders.

In answering a previous question of yours, I said that the Mawson angle was media/PR to raise money for the research. It’s a little cheesy, but it’s also necessary.

In response to the first article – of course it was done “on the cheap” because contrary to one of the Top 10 Denier lies, all climate science research (and scientific research, in general) is done “on the cheap” because there is not enough available funding to do it any other way. Field research scientists often know that they are putting themselves in physical danger – that’s just part of the job.

We’ve all been injured as a result of being in places and doing things that no sane would person would ever consider doing. Data don’t fall off a tree in the backyard. All too often, the only way to collect data is to go the last place on earth that you would ever wish to go. If nature isn’t trying to kill you, people living in unstable countries are. Try being in the middle of nowhere in a foreign country when the police and/or military jack you up with the “it’s your money or your life – and we might just kill you, anyway-routine”. Once in the Middle East, I had to beat up the driver of a moving taxi to keep him from delivering me to some people who don’t particularly like Americans. The next day, I went to work just like every other day – because that’s just the way it is. And it’s also one of the reasons I have so little patience with the small but determined group of lying Sage, et al-weenies on Y!A.

As for the second article, you can bet the farm that the story was either staged or is a complete lie.

No. I think there's a certain amount of smug, sanctimonious, hand-wringing going on by people who somehow magically expect everything to always go perfectly. And it's easy to laugh at other people's misfortune when you didn't contribute anything to the planning or science yourself.

The point of the expedition was to investigate changes in the distribution of ice. They got caught in their own experiment. Ok, it's kinda funny when experts mess up ... but the way people are going on about it reminds me of school. You know, when the teacher made a mistake and everyone jumped on the bandwagon trying to point it out. I guess it makes small minded people feel better about themselves.

Alarmists live in their own reality and will probably say that AGW is the cause of the increased Antarctic sea ice.

"The models said there would be more, less or about the same amount of Antarctic sea ice this year and they were 100% correct."

I wonder if they are going to rescue the innocent ship .

Its going to be crushed by the ice .

Not at all. That expedition was more like the Love Boat. These horny Climate Scientists can get away from their wives and get to play around with their 'assistants'. They get to do that on our dime.

Why should I trust a known BS site?

What has this got to do with AGW????
