How many science articles has Joseph Blast ever read in his lifetime?

It's "Bast" without the L, I think. Bast has a self-professed love of "The Great Books" and his self-described resume makes him seem to be a bit crazy. Eight years in college without graduating? I knew guys like that in college and they were not particularly good with rational decision making. Anyway, it's probably safe to assume that even after 8 years at Univ. of Chicago, the closest Bast ever came to reading a science paper was sweeping up the technical section at the library.

Point of Clarification: I do not count any papers he might have edited that were written by climate skeptics. Climate skeptics write pseudo-science papers.

I'm sure at least *once*, one of them has tried to read a science paper of some sort. I'm sure most or all of them had science classes at one point, and they usually make you read scientific papers at least once for some research project or other.

Now, of course, the next question is if they *understood* anything in said science paper. Scientific papers can be a little tricky to understand even for people who *are* trained in science, much less the, ah, reality-challenged.

But, as to your initial question, I would be surprised if the number is in the double digits.

It is absolutely mindboggling that (1) anyone with a shred of self-respect and decency would produce, broadcast, or participate in such shameless lying and that (2) any adult in the industrialized world could be stupid enough to believe it.

How lame does someone have to be before the people lying to them stop caring whether their lies have any believability? When the government gets back to work, I think I’ll send the Forest Service an email saying, “the dog ate my report.”

We may never know. If Joe Blast would rather state his opinions, rather than outright lie, he would avoid reading science articles.

Joseph Blast is the head of Heartland Institute.

Thanks to Ottawa Mike for the link in his post to James's earlier question about "authoritative" organizations that "cast doubt on man-made climate change."

The video clip embedded in that linked-to page of O. Mike, which features Mr. Blast presenting Heartland's "peer-reviewed" report on climate change, might become highly recommended viewing for every relative and descendent of Joseph Blast from until 3013.

It is a refreshing rarity to see an anti-science denier be so direct and transparent.

Here are a couple of other names to remember, for the thousand years of shame file:

Brett Baier, the "news"caster on that Fox clip

Roger Ailes, Chairman and CEO, Fox

Rupert Murdoch, owner, Fox

Remember those names (above). There are useful Wikipedia articles on all three, and on Fox and Heartland.

What was the question here? Maybe think of it this way:

How often have any of those three ever picked up a copy of Science, Nature or Scientific American?

U.S. National Academy of Sciences, 2010:

“Climate change is occurring, is caused largely by human activities, and poses significant risks for a broad range of human and natural systems.”

http://www8.nationalacademies.org/onpinews/newsitem.aspx?RecordID=12877

“Choices made now about carbon dioxide emissions reductions will affect climate change impacts experienced not just over the next few decades but also in coming centuries and millennia…Because CO2 in the atmosphere is long lived, it can effectively lock the Earth and future generations into a range of impacts, some of which could become very severe.”

“The Academy membership is composed of approximately 2,100 members and 380 foreign associates, of whom nearly 200 have won Nobel Prizes. Members and foreign associates of the Academy are elected in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research; election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a scientist or engineer.”
