Is global warming a hoax or is it true that we humans have caused it, and what evidence is there either way?

It is a hoax. Even the ones who advocate AGW, admit it is a ruse.

Quote by Ottmar Edenhoffer, high level UN-IPCC official: "We redistribute de facto the world's wealth by climate policy...Basically it's a big mistake to discuss climate policy separately from the major themes of globalization...One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy. This has almost nothing to do with environmental policy anymore."

Quote by Club of Rome: "In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill....All these dangers are caused by human intervention....and thus the “real enemy, then, is humanity itself....believe humanity requires a common motivation, namely a common adversary in order to realize world government. It does not matter if this common enemy is “a real one or….one invented for the purpose."

The Earth has been cooling for over a decade now. Yet the CO2 level has increased. To a scientific mind this would be enough to come to a conclusion.

That should be proof enough.

Neither.

To be a hoax someone needs to have planned it. I believe that several people have "helped it along" because it profited them but that does not make it a hoax.

Also, although the globe has been warming since the end of the last glacial period we did not cause it. The earth has warmed and cooled many times before and, so far, I have not seen any convincing evidence that this time is in any way different from the others.

The onus is on the proponents of man-made global warming to show that it is happening.

This debate has been raging for over 100 years now. Somehow, even though it's "real" we continue along just fine.

Is our climate changing? The succession of temperate summers and open winters through several years, culminating last winter in the almost total failure of the ice crop throughout the valley of the Hudson, makes the question pertinent. The older inhabitants tell us that the Winters are not as cold now as when they were young, and we have all observed a marked diminution of the average cold even in this last decade. - New York Times June 23, 1890

The question is again being discussed whether recent and long-continued observations do not point to the advent of a second glacial period, when the countries now basking in the fostering warmth of a tropical sun will ultimately give way to the perennial frost and snow of the polar regions - New York Times - February 24, 1895,

The Oceanographic observations have, however, been even more interesting. Ice conditions were exceptional. In fact, so little ice has never been noted. The expedition all but established a record….Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society - January 1905

“Fifth ice age is on the way…..Human race will have to fight for its existence against cold.” – Los Angles Times October 23, 1912

The Arctic ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot.... Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers, he declared, all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone... Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared. Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelts, which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds. - Washington Post 11/2/1922

Scientist says Arctic ice will wipe out Canada, Professor Gregory of Yale University stated that “another world ice-epoch is due.” He was the American representative to the Pan-Pacific Science Congress and warned that North America would disappear as far south as the Great Lakes, and huge parts of Asia and Europe would be “wiped out.” – Chicago Tribune August 9, 1923

Ignore the whack jobs who deny it. They are uneducated rubes who don't know what they are talking about.

The National Academy of Science is the association of America's greatest scientists. It was created (signed into law by Abraham Lincoln) specifically to guide the nation in issues of complex science. The worlds greatest scientists have been very clear: it is indisputable.

The NAS has developed both a booklet and a video series specifically to answer your questions about evidence. You can access either here. The entire video is 26 minutes, but you can watch it in 7 segments so only about 4 minutes at a time if that's your preference. The booklet is in the form of a 37-page pdf; the link below does not download that pdf but takes you to the NAS page so that you can download it yourself.

You can also read the joint statement from the leading national science academies around the world. There are none that think it is not a risk. All of the scientists from all around the world are very very clear:

(a 2-page pdf)

It’s clear global warming/climate change is real. It’s equally clear the > current < warming cycle has been going on since the last ice age and that’s why the Sahara was grassland 10,000 years ago but is desert today + has been desert for centuries. The fact the current warming trend started long before there was any industry and when there were hardly any people is good evidence humans are not the cause. It also means humans are not the solution.

The Earth goes through constant climate change cycles and has done so throughout its history. The exact mechanism is not completely understood but appears to be related to solar activity and the axial tilt of the Earth as it orbits the sun - not human activity. Note that the Earth is apparently at the end of the current warming cycle and should begin cooling soon (“soon” in geological terms).

All of the carbon tax/carbon offset BS is just robbery or extortion disguised as science. Countries like China and India LOVED the idea of carbon taxes/carbon offsets – but only when they could pretend to be “undeveloped”. Once it was pointed out both are horrific polluters of > every type < they suddenly weren’t so keen on the idea. Only the global Left and countries like North Korea & Zimbabwe still love the idea of carbon taxes.

The Left loves the idea because they are dedicated to destroying the West in general and the USA in particular. Getting the developed world to wreck its own industrial base is something they want. Having the West simultaneously give free guilt-money to countries like North Korea & Zimbabwe would just make it better.

Unfortunately, scientific research has been compromised by the politics of the subject. The academic community leans far to the Left, so researchers who “prove” human-caused global warming (AGW) are rewarded with more grants, but researchers who don’t “prove” AGW find themselves cut off.

The politics of the issue are a problem because we really do need to understand how the Earth works so we can anticipate, predict, and adjust. We also need to reduce actual pollution that is poisoning our environment, and countries like China & India should not get a free ride.

Temperature records show an increase of 0.2 Celsius rise since 1978 to date. We are currently on a trend for temperatures to be exactly what they have averaged from 1980 - 2010 which is still a little higher than the average but they are trending downward. If global average temperatures drop another 0.07 C, then we will have matched the 30 year average ('80-'10).

The big scare that started the Global Warming hype was the 1 degree Celsius spike that happened in 1997-1998. It was found later that this was a super El Nino which is a natural warming of the planet's atmosphere that comes from the deep ocean from time to time. Climate science alarmists have been riding that temperature wave long enough. Give it another year. The climate will definitely change and since our media coverage is so much better, I'm sure we will hear about every event that pertains to weather.

Climate science is now saying that the missing warming is in the oceans. It is well known that the oceans can absorb 1100 times more heat than what the atmosphere can. It remains to be seen about where the actual heat went, but in theory it could be hiding in the ocean depths. I'm sure the search will go on looking for it.

We now have about 3000 ARGO floats dispersed over 140,000,000 square miles of ocean and they are measuring 2000 meters into the ocean. They stay under water for 10 days at a depth of 1000 meters and then they drop to 2000 meters and make continual measurements all of the way to the surface. They do that about 150 times before they need replaced. They are looking for the missing heat that climate science said was suppose to be in the atmosphere.

Warming by nature was definitely not a hoax. The Super El Nino of 1997-1998 is standing proof of nature's ability to cause a tremendous rise in atmospheric temperatures. To the extent that humans caused it is still unknown.

CO2 is a greenhouse gas but as it's warming effect logarithmically diminishes with concentration little effect has come from man, as it was the first 50ppm that has done the most warming.

I don't believe it started as a hoax, I think it was a serious theory, that was hijacked by politicians and others to further their own causes.

By digging up coal, oil, and natural gas that was buried deep underground for millions of years or longer and burning it we have increased the amount of CO2 in the air by about 30% in the last 200 years. Burning wood makes no net change in CO2 because the wood grew in the first place by taking CO2 out of the air. Burning wood just recycles CO2 from the air into wood and back to the air, while fossil fuels add new CO2 to the air. CO2 gas allows visible light energy from the Sun to hit the ground but blocks the infrared light from the warm ground from going back out into space, so this will warm the planet.

So the warming is 100% true and 100% man made. The only question is not will the planet warm, it is how much will the planet warm.

We are all going to cook.

Send me your money.

Well cigarettes that humans smoke produce Carbon Monoxide. A toxic gas that is tasteless, colorless, and odorless. That substance burns holes into the Ozone Layer. The ozone layer keeps out powerful rays of sun. So now with holes in the ozone layer, powerful rays of sun can come down and heat the earth much more than it did 50 years ago

It is a theory not a fact. There is a good amount of evidence that proves it is happening. It is a little hoax and people hype it up a little because it is happening VERY slowly.

A century of massive scientific research, supported by nearly every major science academy and explained in nearly every college-level general science textbook, shows unequivocally that human-caused long term global climate change is real, serious, and mostly negative for our economy.

Two decades of fossil fuel industry sponsored myth-making, supported by a small army of con artists, kooks, illiterate dupes, and the unscrupulous politicians who feed off them, pretend in loud ignorant arrogance that the science (for a hundred laughably inconsistent reasons, see: http://www.skepticalscience.com/argument... ) is somehow not true.

See here for the science, its history, and main implications:

U.S. National Academy of Sciences, 2010:

http://books.nap.edu/openbook.php?record...

“Climate change is occurring, is caused largely by human activities, and poses significant risks for a broad range of human and natural systems.”

http://www8.nationalacademies.org/onpine...

“Choices made now about carbon dioxide emissions reductions will affect climate change impacts experienced not just over the next few decades but also in coming centuries and millennia…Because CO2 in the atmosphere is long lived, it can effectively lock the Earth and future generations into a range of impacts, some of which could become very severe.”

“The Academy membership is composed of approximately 2,100 members and 380 foreign associates, of whom nearly 200 have won Nobel Prizes. Members and foreign associates of the Academy are elected in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research; election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a scientist or engineer.”
