Global Warming facts?

I need information about global warming that most people know, some people know, and very few people know.. for a project! Thankss

? Average temperatures have climbed 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 degree Celsius) around the world since 1880, much of this in recent decades, according to NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

? The rate of warming is increasing. The 20th century's last two decades were the hottest in 400 years and possibly the warmest for several millennia, according to a number of climate studies. And the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports that 11 of the past 12 years are among the dozen warmest since 1850.

? The Arctic is feeling the effects the most. Average temperatures in Alaska, western Canada, and eastern Russia have risen at twice the global average, according to the multinational Arctic Climate Impact Assessment report compiled between 2000 and 2004.

? Arctic ice is rapidly disappearing, and the region may have its first completely ice-free summer by 2040 or earlier. Polar bears and indigenous cultures are already suffering from the sea-ice loss.

? Glaciers and mountain snows are rapidly melting―for example, Montana's Glacier National Park now has only 27 glaciers, versus 150 in 1910. In the Northern Hemisphere, thaws also come a week earlier in spring and freezes begin a week later.

? Coral reefs, which are highly sensitive to small changes in water temperature, suffered the worst bleaching―or die-off in response to stress―ever recorded in 1998, with some areas seeing bleach rates of 70 percent. Experts expect these sorts of events to increase in frequency and intensity in the next 50 years as sea temperatures rise.

? An upsurge in the amount of extreme weather events, such as wildfires, heat waves, and strong tropical storms, is also attributed in part to climate change by some experts.

? Industrialization, deforestation, and pollution have greatly increased atmospheric concentrations of water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, all greenhouse gases that help trap heat near Earth's surface.

? Humans are pouring carbon dioxide into the atmosphere much faster than plants and oceans can absorb it.

? These gases persist in the atmosphere for years, meaning that even if such emissions were eliminated today, it would not immediately stop global warming.

? Some experts point out that natural cycles in Earth's orbit can alter the planet's exposure to sunlight, which may explain the current trend. Earth has indeed experienced warming and cooling cycles roughly every hundred thousand years due to these orbital shifts, but such changes have occurred over the span of several centuries. Today's changes have taken place over the past hundred years or less.

? Other recent research has suggested that the effects of variations in the sun's output are "negligible" as a factor in warming, but other, more complicated solar mechanisms could possibly play a role.

? Sea level could rise between 7 and 23 inches (18 to 59 centimeters) by century's end, the IPCC's February 2007 report projects. Rises of just 4 inches (10 centimeters) could flood many South Seas islands and swamp large parts of Southeast Asia.

? Some hundred million people live within 3 feet (1 meter) of mean sea level, and much of the world's population is concentrated in vulnerable coastal cities. In the U.S., Louisiana and Florida are especially at risk.

? Glaciers around the world could melt, causing sea levels to rise while creating water shortages in regions dependent on runoff for fresh water.

? Strong hurricanes, droughts, heat waves, wildfires, and other natural disasters may become commonplace in many parts of the world. The growth of deserts may also cause food shortages in many places.

? More than a million species face extinction from disappearing habitat, changing ecosystems, and acidifying oceans.

? The ocean's circulation system, known as the ocean conveyor belt, could be permanently altered, causing a mini-ice age in Western Europe and other rapid changes.

? At some point in the future, warming could become uncontrollable by creating a so-called positive feedback effect. Rising temperatures could release additional greenhouse gases by unlocking methane in permafrost and undersea deposits, freeing carbon trapped in sea ice, and causing increased evaporation of water.

You asked for facts; what you got from Kree was nearly entirely propaganda.

That the earth has warmed 0.8C since 1880 is not particularly controversial, although the Met Office recently admitted that this rate of warming is not statistically significant. More importantly, the claim that the warming is accelerating is demonstrably false. In all of the datasets, the warming rate over the last 17 to 23 years is not statistically distinguishable from zero.

Most importantly, none of this establishes causality; this is the principle failure of the global warming movement...even if there is warming, and even if it does correlate to CO2 levels (it doesn't, at least, not very well), correlation is not causation.

The GISS dataset is the hottest of all of those used today. It is based on surface station data, which have severe quality problems: 89% of the stations in the US do not meet the standards for siting; they are too close to buildings, asphalt, windbreaks, autos, even air conditioning units. What Kree didn't tell you is that the US government has established a sample network of well-sited stations, and the temperatures measured in that cohort are a full 2 degrees colder than in the standard network--more than the entire warming signal. There are corrections made to the surface station data after collection which add 2deg F to the warming, and these corrections have never been validated by others. Fully 2/3 of the observed warming in the 20th century is contained in the corrections.

The stations in the baseline are largely not the same one in today's network. Most of the stations have been decomissioned, and the locations of the remaining ones bias the network towards urban locations and low elevations. When only the long-lived stations are considered, the warming signal evaporates.

The agencies holding the data claim that their software corrects for Urban Heat Island effects, but statistical analysis and other studies indicate this is not the case.

Receding glaciers mean nothing in terms of causality. They have been receding since the end of the little ice age in the early 1800's, long before man's CO2 emissions became significant (generally considered to be 1940).

All of the scary 'effects' of global warming have failed to show up in the actual data. Tornadoes are down since 1950. We are in the midst of the longest 'drought' in hurricanes since the civil war. There is no trend in drought. Geological data indicate warm periods are associated with more rain, and more vegetation, while it is the colder periods that show evidence of drought.

Ocean acidification is a farce. There is not enough carbon in the crust of the earth to make the oceans acidic. The reduction in pH that is being seen is less than the daily variation seen at many locations around the earth. The assertion that 'habitat will be destroyed' and 'millions of species will go extinct' is an assertion based on nothing.

The sea levels are not rising at a rate any different than has been going on for the last several thousand years, as we are recovering from the last ice age. The current rate is much slower that 10,000 years ago. There is no evidence that any of the current sea level rise is due to human activities.

Most of the prediction of AGW and its effects are predictions made by scientists; but these are not scientific predictions. Research on forecasting indicates that experts cannot forecast any better than novices. Until and unless these predictions are shown to validate against real-world data, they are nothing more than speculation. Given the lack of scientific basis for the prediction, it is just as likely that we will see global cooling as global warming.

We are repeatedly told that there is a 'scientific consensus'. This is bunk. Science is not done by consensus. In the words of Richard Feynman, Nobel Laureate in physics:

"It does not matter who you are, or how smart you are, or what title you have, or how many of you there are, and certainly not how many papers your side has published, if your prediction is wrong then your hypothesis is wrong. Period."

Global warming is the rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans . It is due to high amount of green house gases such as carbon dioxide in atmosphere. The level of green hose gases is increased due to large use of vehicles, deforestation, from burning fossil fuels etc.

The high amount of green house gases will result in the increase of atmospheric temperature. Warming of atmosphere is actually known as global warming.

Rising Seas, Changes in rainfall patterns, Increased l flooding, etc., Melting of the ice caps will be the effects of global warming. Due to melting of ice, habitat near the poles will loss.

Spread of disease s. Migration of diseases such as malaria to new, now warmer, regions.

One third of coral reefs now appear to have been severely damaged by warming seas. The plankton will loss because of warming.

By afforestation, usage of energy efficient products, reducing the usage of vehicles, plastics and try to reuse it we can control the emission of green house gases. The other important thing is reduce the amount of air conditioning. Ac is the source of emission of green house gases such as Chloro Flouro Carbon etc.

To protect our earth we need to take these precautions.

Global warming is getting very very bad. Soon Antarctica will melt in two seconds and a giant wave bigger than Mount Everest will fall open the entire world. Only few will survive on a giant ship that will somehow overcome the wave even though nothing else does. And then the only country around will be Africa...oh wait I was just thinking of the movie 2012!

Our snow is finally melting in Oregon.

1 CO2 is a greenhouse gas and can raise earths temperature

2 Arctic ice and some glaciers are melting, but Antarctic ice is growing and it is slightly cooling

3 CO2's greenhouse effect logarithmically reduces as it's concentration increases, without positive feedbacks it cannot raise Earths temperature more than the few degrees it already has.

Its a ideology not science .
