Carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere by human activity?

Does anyone know what are 3 possible sources of human related carbon dioxide production?

Thanks!

Jazmin,

There are numerous sources of manmade carbon dioxide (CO2), the three biggest are:

? Electricity Generation. Responsible for 32% of our CO2 emissions. The fossil fuels (oil, coal and gas) that are burned in power stations give off huge amounts of CO2.

? Deforestation and land use change. Responsible for 24% of our CO2 emissions. Deforestation is the wholesale cutting down of trees, around the world this is a major problem with millions of acres of forest being lost each year. Trees grow by removing CO2 from the atmosphere, when they’re cut down they no longer do this but they also release all that stored carbon back into the atmosphere (unless the timber is preserved, which most of it isn’t).

? Transportation. Responsible for 17% of our CO2 emissions. Whether it’s cars, planes, boats, trains or motorbikes, nearly all forms of motorised transport burn liquid fuel – gasoline, aviation fuel, diesel etc. When this fuel is burned it produces significant amounts of CO2, and because of the chemical reaction that’s involved, the weight of the CO2 that’s produces is more than three times the weight of the fuel that’s burned.

1. When we breath our bodies absorb some of the oxygen in the air mix it with some of the carbon in our bodies and we breath out a little more carbon dioxide than we breath in. This accounts for a very very small increase in the amount of carbon dioxide released to the atmosphere.

2. When we drive our cars the exhaust gas from the engine contains more carbon dioxide than the air intake to the engine. This accounts for a fair amount of carbon dioxide release to the atmosphere.

3. When we use any electrical device in our homes the power station where the electricity was generated increases its release of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. This accounts for a lot of the overall carbon release.

In 1900 our factories were releasing as much CO2 into the air as all the world's volcanoes put together. Today we are releasing 120 times as much CO2 as the world's volcanoes, mainly by burning fossil fuels which now releases 30 billion tons of CO2 into the air each year. About half of that is dissolved into the oceans, making them more acidic and threatening ocean life – and the other half stays in the atmosphere where it is a greenhouse gas that warms the earth, but the increasing CO2 is causing the Earth to warm more than is healthy for plants and animals and our civilization.

Oil, coal and natural gas.

Breathing.

Raising cattle.

Welding.

The main one is breathing. Every one breathes, not every one drives.
