Russias climate?

Why is Russia so cold during the winter, but so warm during the summer?

Russia’s climate varies according to areas, from the deep Arctic chill of the far north to the searing desert heat of some inland areas further south. Yet, throughout much of the country there are only two distinct seasons – winter and summer. Spring and autumn are only brief changes in winter and summer.

You need to be more specific. Russia is a very big country, over 11% of the earth's land mass. There are different climates in an area that big.

Maybe that's the answer to your question: there are places in Russia that are very cold in winter and places that are very warm in summer.

It is in the Northern Hemisphere and has prevalent winds generally in a easterly direction and tends to have a continental climate that isn't moderated much by nearby oceans. Bacheous is right though. It is very big with a varied climate.

Because winter is cold and summer is warm

It is because it is a large continent, which doesn't have the moderating influence of the oceans, the farther you get away from seas or oceans the more extreme climate becomes.

Kinda' like Washington D.C.?
