Why is global warming not stoppable?

Let me state first, I believe global warming is not man-made.

Okay for your debate.

We have 7 billion people on this planet all who want a better life style, energy demands are rising and are going to escalate,

If we increase renewable energy sources by ten times it won't come close to fulfilling energy needs, in fact it is doubtful if fossil fuel energy will be able to keep up.

To stop emissions we need worldwide agreement which will never happen.

Man cannot stop global warming because man did not cause it. Global warming is caused by nature, just like the weather, sunshine or gravity. Just as man cannot stop the rain or turn down the brightness of the sun man cannot stop global warming.

Anyway, nature has already caused a pause or a stop to global warming because there has not been any for over 16 years. Even Rajendra Pachauri of the IPCC says so.

So, if you are under 16 you cannot have known any climate change if the IPCC is right. How does this work out with what your teachers tell you? Who is right, I wonder, the world experts in the IPCC or your teachers?

Anyway, good points for the debate - best of luck!!

It is not stoppable (at least, not by man), because man is not causing it, or, at least, not enough of it to matter. We cannot stop that over which we have no control.

1. Multiple lines of evidence indicate climate sensitivity is about 0.5°C for a doubling of CO2.

2. Atmospheric temperatures not rising in accordance with the predictions of Hansen (1988) or the IPCC. Current temps are below Hansen’s Scenario C (severe cutbacks in CO2 emissions from 1988, no growth after 2000).

3. Ocean temps (per Argo) from 2003 show no net increase; 6.0 x 10^22 joules of heat are missing.

4. ERBE satellite data show outgoing radiation increases as temperature increases, opposite to that predicted by all the climate models.

5. The radiosonde data show that the ‘hotspot’ in the upper tropical troposphere, predicted by all the models, is not there.

6. Empirical data indicates a net sensitivity of approximately 0.5°C per doubling of the CO2.

7. The global climate models fail to validate against real data; they fail in forecast and hindcast, and show errors 12x that of a flat line model.

“It does not matter who you are, or how smart you are, or what title you have, or how many of you there are, and certainly not how many papers your side has published, if your prediction is wrong then your hypothesis is wrong. Period.”

―Richard Feynman

1. Climate governed by cycles.

2. Cycles governed by oceanic currents, and sunspot acitivity.

3. Volcanic acitivity at bottom of oceans remains undocumented as to its direct impact upon heating the marine layer and causing the release of CO2.

4. Geological record implies cycles have occurred in distant past, before humanity had any impact upon GHGs.

5. Ice packs melting faster than modeling predicts, indicative of other factors being involved.

6. World bigger, with larger heat capacity, than mankind is capable of altering over thirty to fifty year time period.

China.

China's emissions are now nearly 30% of the global emissions. They are growing at 9% per year.

Here's a chart of emissions in 2012.

http://sagacommodities.com/files/custom/...

This is china's emissions growth (chart below). They are still accelerating, whereas emissions from the USA and Europe have steadied.

Unless china dramatically changes its co2 output, then global emissions will continue to rise. China is not likely to do this soon, because of this...

http://cstpr.colorado.edu/prometheus/wp-...

National wealth and co2 emissions are extremely tightly linked.

China is growing it's economy very quickly and lifting its citizens from poverty and hardship ( this is a generslisation). They will continue to improve the lot of their citizens, and co2 emissions will continue to rise.

If global warming is caused by anthropogenic co2, then it will continue until china's emissions are dramatically reduced.

Edit. Detail added.

China's emissions doubled 1992 to 2003 then doubled again 2003 to 2011.

In a debate, you should first define "unstoppable". If you mean it can be set to zero within your lifetime then no, it cannot be stopped. CO2 lasts in atmosphere for 50 to 200 years. That is the physics; no debate can change that. If humans immediately stopped emitting CO2 altogether then it would take two centuries for levels to drop to where they would be naturally. You would still have a warmer atmosphere than 100 years ago due to the loss of polar ice extent and albedo, and becuase of the methane released from thawed permafrost. The atmosphere would continue to warm at least for for decades, and would remain warmer than natural for at least decades after it reached the natural level of CO2.

If humans merely reduced CO2 emissions down to 1990 levels, then warming will continue indefinitely albeit at a slower and more manageable rate.

The best hope is to reduce to 1990 levels and keep warming at 2 degrees are less by the end of this century, then hope that increased technology will continue to reduce emissions and warming can stop at that level in the distant future. That is not a physical impossibility, but right now seems to be a political impossibility.

Increased warming is already built into the system. The arguments now are the level and the speed that we leave to your generation and following generations.

You cannot stop global warming because the atmosphere has been damaged so much that how do we repair it, some will say that it may repair itself and maybe so, but I cant see it repairing itself when we have yet to deal with the roots of the causes why its damaged in the first place. There are more vehicles on the road than ever before and this has to be one reason why the atmosphere has damage. There are more and more larger factories and large corporations which are omitting toxic fumes into the atmosphere, so then how does it repair itself with all this ongoing problems. Then there is the sun and how do we slow down the sun, (mind you I haven't figured out how it continuously burns year in year out).....So, the two things combined and global warming will never stop then, will it ?

I hope this class didn't replace your physics class.

this is one of the way to control global warming but chances are there to stop global warming visit here: http://www.solarheights.blogspot.in/

So i know it is stoppable, but In class we are having a debate, and my side is why it is unstoppable, or un curable. Please give me points on what i can use to defend my position. Thank you in advanced!(:

There's a lot of emphasis put on man-made causation. What they don't tell you is that there is a thing called "Natural Climate Variability". It is true that humans emit gases that are considered "greenhouse gases", but most won't tell you is that most of these are natural gases anyway and human input at any one time is less than 1%. It is not known how much of that forces the climate to change. Any claim that it "absolutely" or "unequivocally" is causing Global Warming is only a theory. Temperatures are not rising as fast as they said they would a few years ago.

Global warming is not stoppable because we do not have the political will to put on the brakes. There is a well-funded Climate Change Denial Machine which puts out propaganda and misinformation to discourage people from believing the scientific evidence. They also contribute huge amount to political campaigns to elect people who will continue to subsidize fossil fuel use while trying to undermine any efforts to curb in our carbon emissions.

A good reference on the climate denial machine is given below.

Because the things that cause it are impossible to change.

well...u cant beat the sun can u?

Nature is all mighty and will not stop because Humans want it to.
