What's worse for humans global cooling or global warming?

Assuming similar magnitude and speed, it's pretty close to a wash. I think global warming may be *slightly* worse, but it really depends on where you live.

The really important difference, however, is not the direction, but how much and how fast the temperature is changing. Even if cooling was much worse than warming, it is still very likely the case that 1C in 1000 years of cooling (which is, as far as we can tell, around the normal cooling rate for ice ages) would be better than 3C in 100 years of warming.

That's because most living things, and most of our infrastructure, depends on things being about how they were in the past. We build our cities where they are because of where the arable land, ports, and so forth are. We grow our crops where they will grow well, we build our houses to deal with the weather conditions that are likely to occur (eg tilted vs flat roofs, basements vs no basements, AC and heating), and so on. Similarly, most living things live in the temperatures they do well in. If these things change rapidly, in *either* direction, a lot of things will either be in the wrong climate, or have to be moved.

11/28/2012 ended Global Warming, confirmed and triggered Haley's Comet into returning to its original mission. It collided with the so-called incoming Asteroid in deep space 13 years from earth Dubbed THE BIG BANG. Global Iceing and Global warming is'nt happening nor will ever happen in the next 1,000 years. Have a nice day. Global command.

Global warming

“Today, we live in an unusually cold period in the history of life on earth and there is no reason to believe that a warmer climate would be anything but beneficial for humans and the majority of other species. There is ample reason to believe that a sharp cooling of the climate would bring disastrous results for human civilization.

Humans are a tropical species. We evolved at the equator in a climate where freezing weather did not exist. The only reasons we can survive these cold climates are fire, clothing, and housing…It is “extremely likely” that a warmer temperature than today’s would be far better than a cooler one.”

~ Dr. Patrick Moore’s Feb. 25, 2014 testimony?before the U.S. Senate Environment & Public Works Committee

Both: cooling causes the world to become cold and food plants hard to grow: but people can dress for the cold. Heating up again crops will die off, the planet will dry off, and heat as with cold does kill people. We see the affect warming is having on the oceans and marine life right now, cold will cause the same type of problems as well.

Without doubt global cooling, during the medieval and roman warming periods, humans thrived and civilizations grew, during the little ice age there was famine and plague and many died.

The climate during the 'dark ages' was also thought to be cold.

Warming because it's real and cooling is not.

Warming because it's real and cooling is not

What's worse?

global warming is worst as it also leads to global cooling also

Hands down almost without debate AMONG THOSE WHO UNDERSTAND SCIENCE PHYSICS AND/OR BIOLOGY global cooling is worse.

There was actually more inhabitable land at glacial maximum.

When Earth cools enough, we will be able to grow crops east of Miami.

Either way are killers so both are our worst nightmare.

Well, that depends, (a) on the amount, and (b) the time frame.

First lets look at cooling, and the time frame.

You keep seeing references to the coming ice age.

That's not happening. Not in hundreds, maybe thousands of years.

Here's a description of why ice ages occur.

And while you're reading, keep in mind that the CO2 we've added to the atmosphere will prolong the interglacial that we're currently experiencing.

Historically, global warming, and cooling occur naturally.

Ice ages occur in about 100,000 year cycles.

Changes in the eccentricity of the earth's orbit are the driving factor.

When the orbit is very eccentric, an ice age occurs.

When the orbit is more circular, we have an inter-glacial.

That's what's happening now.

It will be a few thousand years before we can expect natural causes to drive the climate toward cooling, and a new ice age.

In the graph, note how ice age cycles line up with eccentricity cycles.

Here's a more complete description of the cycles. However, keep in mind that the ice ages fairly accurately line up with the eccentricity cycles.

And a brief general synopsis.

Over shorter intervals, the Maunder Minimum, a period of extreme solar inactivity, was responsible for the Little Ice Age.

Now I'll grant that global cooling would be worse than the global warming that we're likely to experience. However, it's so far in the future that we really do need to address the global warming that is already taking place. And it really is taking place. That's the opinion of most scientists.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warm...

"The finding that the climate has warmed in recent decades and that human activities are already contributing adversely to global climate change has been endorsed by every national science academy that has issued a statement on climate change, including the science academies of all of the major industrialized countries."

Now that you, hopefully, understand that global warming is real, you might consider:

http://www.rkm.com.au/ANIMATIONS/carbon-... <== here's the physics.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/co... <== Note that CO2 intercepts a different wavelength than water. In addition, as CO2 warms the oceans, more water evaporates, increasing it's effectiveness.

And last, a longer description, that contains more than you asked for.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warm...

Global cooling, many more people die of cold than heat, prepare for cold, the Yellowstone Caldera super volcano is getting grumpy and roads are melting, the basin is tipping... worldwide winter with toxic gases and ash...

They can both be terrible, to the point where it matters on the scale, not the particulars.

global warming because if it gets warmer than things like smoke and gas go into the air and evaporate and it also evaporates the water causing bad floods when the water rains

- B

my opinion is global cooling because even though air conditioning and heaters along with thick walls are hard to make and maintain, without shelter it is eiser to die in cold weather than is warm, but this all depends on how fast the weather is changing.

Global warming is a signal that the ICE AGE is upon us, so perhaps some lucky few of us will get to live out your question and see the answer. The Ice Age is coming and its coming soon! Si?

global cooling

Global whining seems to be the most detrimental.

I would think cooling.

But any "quick" change is bad because our technology and culture is finely tuned to live with the existing environment. Any change either way will cost us trillions of dollars to adapt to.

the unrealist actually thinks crops will grow east of Miami, maybe he's so smart that he puts pounds of salt in his garden soil to make thing grow, glad I don't count on him to feed me

Both of them can be worst,so there can not choose the worse one.

LOl both are not real .
