Indeed, the actions are counterproductive according to their own science. Bill Gates highlighted it. If they are saying you need an 80 % cut by 2050, it is better to focus on achieving that than a 20% cut by 2020 which won't do anything anyway. Spending all this money on small cuts takes money away from achieving big cuts.
Now the supposed benefits of emissions cuts are far in the future. In 1998 people in high school were being told about runaway temperatures, the planet has a fever, but by the time they are 40 they are seeing roughly the same temperature as that same year, which suggests the runaway temperatures are overstated.
1) Just because a problem doesn't impact OUR generation doesn't mean it shouldn't be taken seriously. For instance, our fossil fuel supplies are projected to last till about 2050. So, you might enquire, 'So, what's the big deal? We're set, right?'. Yes, but the fundamental question remains: what happens after that? What happens for the next generation of individuals?
2) The problem doesn't just affect humanity. It affects various species of the animal kingdom. Penguins, for instance, will be driven further and further towards endangerment and extinction with the current rate of melting icecaps. Certain animals and plants will be unable to adjust themselves to such changes in climate.
3) Generally speaking, global warming isn't a concern because of its impact on a particular generation of people or a timeframe of half a century. It's the very real and frightening notion that if us humans continue to engage in the habits we do today, that we very will be contributing to the demise of our planet. It might not be 50 years, or even 100, but it would be stupidity to ignore legitimate worry over alarming changes in weather and climate when we are in a position to minimise, and if we are sustainable enough, prevent the damage.
