How misleading is this article?

National Geographic will try to make heroes of this ship of Climate Cult dummies stuck in summer ice.

I think this article ask a good question:

Did Organizers Recklessly, Negligently Put Lives And Property At Risk? (to produce more Climate Cult propaganda) http://www.thegwpf.org/expedition-cheap-...

-----------------------

How close did they get?

"A major goal was to visit Cape Denison, where Mawson set up his base camp. He was able to sail straight into the area but access has since been blocked by a 75-mile-long iceberg called B09B. In the intervening years the water in the bay has become encrusted with ice and the only way to get to Cape Denison is by air or land.

Just over a week ago, 11 of us made the 140km round trip from our ship to Mawson's Huts using Argo vehicles"

from: http://www.theguardian.com/world/antarct... NB There were Guardian journalists on board.

In fairness to the captain, he did want to leave the area but the "scientists" took too long to gather their equipment together. That delayed them long enough to get surrounded with ice.

This is what the onboard Australian Green MP had to say:

"The third drama of the day is the one which is still unfolding. Because of the Argo mishap we got off late, and had one less vehicle to ferry people to and fro. I’m told the Captain was becoming rather definite late in the afternoon that we needed to get everyone back on board ASAP because of the coming weather and the ice closing in. As I write we are continuing to make extremely slow progress through what looks like a winter alpine snow field – it’s yet another surreal part of this journey that we are in a ship trying to barge our way through here! I’m sure the Captain would have been much happier if we had got away a few hours earlier. Maybe we would have made it through the worst before it consolidated as much as it has with the very cold south- easterly winds blowing the ice away from the coast, around and behind us as well as ahead."

Adventure writer David Roberts was quoted in the article as saying:

"It's a royal f--- up and it's being treated as something heroic," he said.

"If I were in that situation, I would retreat with my tail between my legs instead of singing songs about the penguins," he said.

I think that's funny. The article also quotes Fox News: "FoxNews.com reported that global warming skeptics have poked fun at the scientists, highlighting the irony of climate change scientists being trapped in ice." and provided a link to their article.

So I don't see the article as misleading and would in fact consider the Fox-linked article more misleading, focusing on the irony of the situation and far less objective than the National Geographic's article. I wouldn't expect a whole lot of detail from the National Geographic itself, because they are going to want to generate curiosity about the expedition-as they have with you-so people will want to read the article. Good publicity.

Thanks for another good question and link after all the no-content questions and comments lately.

They were stuck in Commonwealth Bay while trying to leave - because of the big damn chunk of iceberg that blew in, changed the circulation pattern and filled the Bay with ice.

The misleading story lines were every one that said or implied that the ship was stuck in annual surface ice. They were two nautical miles from open sea.

You have asked several questions on this subject. Didn't you bother to read the answers or check out the story yourself?

edit --

It blew in the week they got stuck.

"the Mertz Glacier Tongue (outlined by a red box) has been blown out in the last week and driven against our position by the persistent southeasterly winds. It is too early to identify the cause of this remobilisation of ice but we may be looking at the future long-term expansion of fast ice to the east of Commonwealth Bay."

"Unfortunately for the AAE, it appears the region has just undergone a massive reconfiguration of sea ice, years after the loss of the Mertz Glacier tongue. This has been revealed by new satellite imagery which arrived today from the AAD/ACE CRC Sea Ice Group in Hobart, Tasmania."

you can read the report direct from one on the ship. Yes, I'd trust National Geographic- a lot more than WUWT.

Not misleading at all.

But if you almost exclusively get your science related info from known denier sites, it is very likely that whenever you read a non-denier site you find info unknown to you previously.

<>

They left on November 27 and did not get stuck in the ice until Christmas eve so they did have plenty of time to do much of the stuff they had set out to do.

<>

Of course you don't. If you would, you wouldn't provide us every single day with links to the most ridiculous denier blogs.

We the general public, do need to make fun of idiots. The sad part, idiots don't know they are such.

In this they state it was a month long expedition and they were on their way home, hmm can anyone tell me if they actually reached Commonwealth Bay or any part of Antarctic mainland? did they actually do anything apart from getting stuck in the ice?
