if a vehicle uses - say - 10 pounds of fuel in ten miles compared to one that uses only five pounds, the latter probably pollutes less (though it will partly depend on catalyser efficiencies and how ell the fuel is burned)

so a big car (heavy, more pounds of fuel) may pollute more on average;

however an old little car, even though it does perhaps 40mpg, burns its fuel very messily and exceeds the particulates and bad gases compared to a heavy modern 4x4 driven carefully with a lean burn engine.

So if I drive a Ford escort Mexico (light body, modest engine size but old design) like a hooligan and have no cat, the effluent is worse than a new diesel Range Rover driven very gently at low speeds.

Car makers now give C0 and pollution particle averages so newer cars can be compared by looking up the spec's on their web sites.

Warning; the formulae for the urban/extra urban cycles are not necessarily anything like the realistic conditions for such as, cut and thrust traffic jams in London; the tests are more of a laboratory comparison and must be interpreted carefully.

Its very obvious, bigger engine bigger car, more fuel used more pollution.

But what surprises me is very few people consider the difference between gasoline engines and diesel engines. diesel engines are much more efficient economical and produce less emissions.

It has more to do with weight than with the size of the engine. Large cars tend to have larger engines than small cars. They also burn more gas. People often say that small cars get better fuel economy than large cars because they have smaller engines. Small cars can have smaller engines than big cars and they get better fuel economy, but both are because of weight. The big engine in the big car gets a bum rap.

Typically cars with bigger engines have more power and can accelerate more. With this excess power comes increased gas usage which causes increased emissions.

Because the more the pistons it has say if its a 12 piston engine there is petrol that is pumped into the engine then fire is used to move the piston so if there's more pistons there is more fire!

One piston has fire in different timing to the others

generally yes but there can be few acceptions
