Cookie, nobody who understands global warming says we'll 'destroy the earth'. Several things can happen though.
- The increase in CO2 is already making the ocean more acidic. That's a problem for some coral species. And, since lots of other ocean animals depend on coral reefs, that acidification will affect much of the fish life in the ocean. There are several articles that describe what's happening.

- There's only an 8-10 degree difference between global temperature at the depth of an ice age, and the warmest part of an interglacial. The world is warming, and likely to be warmer than has occurred in the last million years, and more.
- What that warming does is drive prime growing areas farther north. Canada is likely to have more farming. But the American plains states could see the return of the dust bowl. Maybe you have noticed that we've seen several dust storms in the last few years.
- Another effect is that where rain falls can change. Calif is in a pretty severe drought. In fact, the southwest is in it's 14th year of drought. We often see talk of desalinization of sea water. It's expensive, but could be done for drinking water. It's not going to work for agriculture though, and farming uses something like 80% of the fresh water in Calif and the rest of the country.
It's unlikely that the earth will make us extinct. Surely not in my, or your, lifetime. On the other hand, if you're young, then global warming will be extremely important in your lifetime. I'm old, so personally it's not going to affect me that much. I do think, however, that I, and all of us, should pay higher taxes to reduce the effects that will surely come, as much as possible. I'm not trying to steal money from you. I'll pay as well. It's just that you'll benefit more than I will, but I'm okay with that. It's the right thing to do.

I'm not denying it, I just don't care. You see, we can not 'destroy the earth'. The earth can, however, make us extinct. When our Mother Earth decides she's had enough of our species, we will be shaken off, like a flea. Now you have one less thing to tell people about or worry about. How nice for you.
At least the deniers are finally figuring out the they are the ones who need to fear angry mobs in the future.
If global warming is not a problem in the future, the worst that will happen to the "warmers" is that we will be forgotten. If global warming does turn out to be serious, then people of the future will have something to be angry about.
