The ocean circulation of warm and cold water is circulated from trade winds to keep the seas replenished with nutrients. This circulation by the wind makes it so it snows often in New York City and the same latitude in Europe at the same time, it rarely snows. This is due to the warm waters being pushed towards England and Europe, away from the United States. This was just an example. Ocean circulation happens across the entire planet, not just in the Atlantic Ocean.

Basically cold water at high latitudes tend to sink, and warmer water tropics tend to replace the sinking cold water, so basically there are a set of warm water currents that tend to flow on the surface from low latitudes to higher ones, while colder water from high latitudes tend to sink to the ocean floor and move toward lower latitudes giving allowances for land masses, which dictate the paths of these currents, a complete circulation can take hundreds of years.
